In Topic: Pike Strikes?

Some pike i have seen in different waters are into flash bigtime...a change to a 3.5" spoon, a 1/2oz spinnerbait or a #5 mepps will often follows into strikes. I agree with both joel and esoxtrout on what they said. Change direction and use varied retrieves until you figure out a pattern to get consistant strikes. SOmetimes a speedy retrieve followed by a 2 second pause every 5 feet will crush pike...all depends on the day!

1 foot snap, 1 foot snap, 1 foot snap then 3 second pause with a j-13 or hj 14 rapala. If pike are very, very shy, then a fly rod with large streamers will get 'em.

In Topic: GOBI'S IN THE GRAND?

OUr part of georgian bay is infested with the gobblers...doesnt matter if you throw a worm down in 10 fow or 60 in certain areas, its gobbled before it hits bottom. You have to wonder just how infested the water is with these things. Using worms you could catch 100 gobies in 5-6 hours in a couple of spots i know. One thing i have noticed about gobies is that they are day time feeders only. The same spots i fish that you cant even hit bottoms with a worm without catching one, as soon as the sun is almost set the gobies stop biting completely and the cats/occasional eye's stroll in. Worms tend to get more action than large minnows though.

In Topic: my first big mouth bass

My guess is it was just a hair under a pound. But what's it really matter this is his first of many I hope. We were in the weedbeds, and everyone else we ran into on the lake was skunked. Franks determination paid off with 2 LMBs.

I think the LMBs are getting smaller, catch and release is not catching on. Everyone wants that trophy, but that's also breeding stock.

Determination is a win/win way to approach fishing! :)
Catch and release is practice for many anglers. I catch hundreds of bass a season and release all except those too deeply hooked. Always let the big ones go after a quick pic or measurement. Now i find walleye are a little harder to let go since they taste soooooo good.
