Generally an experienced fisheman would like a gift card to choose what he would like to have vs having to return somethng and exchange it. It may not be as personal but more practical. I usually ask for gift card for Bass Pro for my BDay, as my needs change from season to season and I need to stock up on different supplies at different times.
Choosing a proper set up for an experienced fisheman can be very overwhelming, best to let them decide. Hope this helps, and good luck.
I completely agree, my parents bought me a fishing rod for Christmas and it wasn't heavy enough, so I asked them if it was alright to exchange it for another one.
They said it was fine, but I can't help but feel like I offended them. Gift card is a good idea.
