G'Day!
So I picked up my first baitcast reel, a (barely) used Ambassador C4 5601, yesterday and I'll be spooling it up with 50lb Suffix 832. Is there any hard/fast rule to determining the test strength of fluoro that I should use as a leader?

Looks like the latest and greatest superline is getting decent reviews so far. Anyone here running a spool of this yet? Curious to how it compares to mono and braid in the hands of real people (ie. not sales people). Almost every line out there boasts great castability, surprising strength, and great knot tying ability. Just curious what of that is true about this new stuff.
I'm tempted to give it a shot, and knowing my dismal abilities to resist trying new things (the package is dangerously shiny), I'll probably pick up a spool of 8lb or 10lb.

Braid keeps breaking
27 July 2011 - 11:07 AM
Hey Guys,
So I'm in my first season of fishing, and managing to get my line wet for about 45 minutes every morning before the kids get up, then about another hour later in the day with the kids. I've been doing this for about a month now and in the last 2 weeks my line has started breaking far too often and far too easily. I'm currently using Suffix 832 10lb, and I'm wondering if with my frequent use if the line might just be weakening from repeated wet/dry cycles. Anyone with more experience than me see this happen before with braid?
I'm also starting to really take my time with tying knots to see if I've gotten sloppy or something which might be causing a break at my knot (polimar, for the most part). It's hard to tell where the break happens when you get a bite, set the hook, then it goes weightless and you reel in a broken line.
Any other suggestions or questions appreciated!

Pike and Bass - Any way to target one and not the other?
10 June 2011 - 01:35 PM
Hey Guys,
So I'm heading up to the lake this afternoon and will be there for the weekend. I understand the lake holds a good amount of largemouth and pike. Right now for my zone, pike is in season but bass is not. Now, while I'm new to fishing I fully expect that I won't be landing very many as I learn. None the less, are there certain techniques, or areas of the lake that I should be targeting in order to be more likely to land pike than bass?
Thanks!
John

New guy from Ottawa-ish

Hey Guys,
My name is John, and I'm in the Ottawa area. Ok, technically I'm across the river in Aylmer QC, but I use Ottawa as my excuse to join the Ontario fishing forum
I've done very little fishing, but have found that this summer I'm going to be living in a cottage on a lake while my wife cooks at a camp/conference center. With ready access to bass a few steps out my door, and a canoe for those times where I've got a few minutes to spare, I figured I should learn to fish. I've been reading everything I can, and chatting a lot with some of the others who have fished that lake to learn as much as possible. Obviously, the real learning will be happening with my line in the water.
I've got a number of other hobbies that share my free time (free time is a relative word, I have 4 kids between the ages of 1 and . Most of my hobbies are of the self-sustaining nature, like growing my own food and brewing my own beer. So fishing seemed to be a good extension of those interests.
Anyhow, I've already busted out my first post or two on the gear forum but thought I'd swing by here for an official "Hello".
Cheers,
John
