Seasons the same for both large and smallmouths.
I have caught both through the ice.

BTW: They are in season in some zones year around & open through 31 Dec. in zone 11.

Simple answer is if you have a line in the water you are fishing.
No need to have a hook on to define fishing. They set a limit of 4 hooks on a line but no minium # of hooks.
If the area is closed to all fishing than don't throw in a line.
BTW: Some species of fish can be caught without hooks. Ball of worms for bullheads or yarn for smelt.
