#312489 Lake X-actly what I needed!

Posted by Bassassins on 23 July 2014 - 11:04 PM

es·cape - to slip or get away, as from confinement or restraint; gain or regain liberty

This is what I needed to do.. lots of work, small quick outings... feeling trapped, rushed and just needed to ESCAPE the city.  With a Monday night and all Tuesday off I talked my friend and newly obsessed fisherman Dave into taking a day off and joining me.  Ended the work day Monday and got out of the city as soon as we could - the wilderness was in our sights, off the beaten path - a little adventure if you will.

15dna7l.jpg

This was Dave's first TRUE camping experience but far from civilization may have not been the best idea --- but to see the true off the grid experience through his eyes was quite fun - could have stared at those stars for days!  The noises we were hearing around us even put a chill down my spike but hey good to get the heart pumping every now and then.

I will be honest I wasn't the first one up in the morning and I have to thank Dave and his excitement for this shot!  He was rushing me way to much to even think of it! lol

2wpus8w.jpg

This lake has been great to us in the past from shore and I was excited to hit it from the boat - started fishing shore lines and the bass just kept coming!

This smile I couldn't get off his face all day - Dave has been fishing a lot around the city but when I said this would be an amazing day I don't think he really knew what he was going to experience - fish after fish after fish ... unfortunately as the day got hotter those hook sets were sPikes instead of bass.

hvdy8k.jpg

As I was reminded a fish is a fish  BUT it really started to get to me a little ... cast, hit, hookset --- another sPike!!! Spinners, Wacky --- even went deep to avoid them on the Drop Shot BUT more and more sPikes!!!  I NEVER would have guessed my highlight from this whole trip would have come with teeth but when they are this big even I won't complain!!!

1t9eab.jpg

We did however manage to find the odd bass through the pike as the day continued...

It was hard to get off the water, who would want this to end but it was time to get back to the real world... A trip I think we will both remember for different reasons but I will admit it was incredible to see this from the point of view of a first timer.

Need to find time for more of these - camping, fishing and a little drinking .... sounds like an adventure to me!!!

Until next time --- tight lines!

#293062 Drumming for GOLD!

Posted by Bassassins on 01 November 2013 - 11:12 PM

Some stories are meant to be told, some ain't, this one definitely is!  Conditions were rather perfect, overcast and the bay was as calm as we could ever dream her to be. Essentially everything was shaping up for a stellar day of chasing gold. Company is always great when we have a chance to do this with our good friend. Day starts with lots of suspend marks showing up on the finder, though we were mostly looking for those big, solitary hooks. Didn't take long for the first rod to fire and we were into a herd of sheep.

79FYg7A.jpg

Right color, wrong species, but they kept us well entertained over the course of the morning. With good weight and the anticipation of the drum roll, those guys definitely give you quite the workout.

2eX2XOr.jpg

All fun and games but its about time for the first sign of gold, Rob cracks the ice with this lovely fella.

Time flies by, the weather is holding up beautifully and good old Quinte is giving us her most well behaved side.

When you're catching them like this you just don't want to stop.  We had a blast doing this all afternoon, exchanging stories, clearing lines and landing one after the other. Great team effort and high fives all around!

YwUSC5t.jpg

All good things must come to an end, this one is no exception, the next hunt for bay eyes will be over the ice. Said goodbye to a good friend, for now, and Bassassins are ready to retreat, with big smirks on our faces of course! Being able to spend a day out like this in late October was a real treat.

#291002 We came, we saw, we conquered...

Posted by Bassassins on 15 October 2013 - 09:41 PM

Its brisk out this morning, even though the sun is up its still chilly and the wind is up quiet a bit, so less than stellar conditions to say the least. The little 4hp drives our 10' aluminum craft towards our first spot. We only fished this lake in the winter time, so open water was a first. Regardless, we had basic understanding of its character, shallow and weedy, hardly any structure at all.

GNpa3Ee.jpg

Searching for anything that would stick out of this sloppy mess was a priority. Cruising along the shore lines quickly revealed what we were looking for, a change in the consistant and it came by the way of large rocky patches sprinkled throughout the thick vegetation like leopard print. These isolated oasis stick out like a soar thumb visible to us and the fish.

We have the location, lets find the pattern.

The water is crystal clear, we started drawing bass in from a distance with spinner baits, picking off the shy followers one by one with the wacky sick sticks. It's a just in case tactic that lets you cover lots of ground and helps you locate and understand the fish, specifically when tackling shallow waters with high visibility.

Location - check!

Pattern - check!

Lets have some fun.

When a system works, it works so as they say...

Don't leave fish to find fish!

We stayed in the general area all day cruising up and drifting down. Keeping it simple, sticking to what was working and just having a blast doing it. You know you are having fun and enjoying one of those highlight fishing days when time flies and you loose all sense of what is going on around - just you, your buddy and fish after fish.

A little friendly competition is always healthy and it was great to see we could step up to the challenge with such success. Fun was had by all with lots of smiles and bass for everyone - thanks boys for the invite!!!

#287434 Salmonella Poisoning

Posted by Bassassins on 24 September 2013 - 11:49 AM

MgSNqTa.jpg

Highly infectious and extremely addictive. There is no known cure, once exposed to it will shape your life.

Even while writing this, the aftermath still rumbles through our veins.  The only wish is to go back, do it again, regardless the tiredness and exhaustion we are left with.

An encounter with a creature that is simply raw power, in its absolute prime, driven with the mindset that there are no obstacles. These fish are determined to go on and will put your every skill to test.

Mastering the learning curve was quiet a challenge but accomplished rather quickly. Rob is the first one to have an audience with the true king of all rivers. Having met his distant cousins, the illusive lake trout, he knew he was in for a treat. A barrage of unstoppable runs laid ahead of him but skill and patients turned this fight in to a first victory.

a3xjwXp.jpg

We scouted out potential resting spots, deep pools and breaks in the fast current. Getting familiar with the hunting ground is vital. Knowing your way around treacherous terrain will give you the confidence of being able to chase after these behemoth when they take off.

Flexibility is key to success, the fish dictates the speed of the game. When a 30lb torpedo with a brain and a seemingly unlimited power source decides to go, it will, just because it can. You don't tire these beasts out they take you out for a ride.

NdOiGD7.jpg

Once we draw first blood the thirst for it was unquenchable.

 9dV1Bq6.jpg

XnCTIx2.jpg

The day goes by drifting single roe eggs under a float with a tiny split shot just heavy enough to make it bounce naturally in the current. Learning to deal with the temper of a bull, these big fish set the true mark on how to combat any big prey.

Later in the afternoon Smooth hooks up with that giant shadow that was resting in a deep pool. His cast was placed text book, slowly floating down stream, one little burst and this King couldn't resist, snap and set and fight. So far this was the biggest fish we have seen all day and it took several runs up and down the ladders to finally get this beast to surrender.

This is the proud smile of a skilled hunter that gave his very best and more to tackle and conquer this royal highness.

OCELu6Q.jpg

Exhausted but satisfied there is no time to celebrate as the next hookup is already in motion.

 QeMT8H7.jpg

We are mostly tag teaming these beautiful creatures but sometimes you find your self alone and its just you and the fish. No assistance in landing or friendly coaching advise, this is where push comes to shove. Single handedly landing a fish like this is a challenge. We love challenges.

dxBZ1X1.jpg

Time always goes by way to fast when you are having fun and way to soon its time to pack it in, John and I where playing the last cast game, over and over. The last chance saloon was about to close its doors as John hooks up once more.

aEC7fy6.jpg

At this point my attention is all on my self as a tank of a salmon decides to put my last strength to the test.

Taking me on an epic run downstream, there is nothing you can do to stop it, hanging on is all there is left.  The drag set as tight as possible, while still allowing some line to escape from the spool is the only way to put a little pressure on these fish.

A mad chase unravels as rocks and boulders fly by on the way down, one eye on the fish the other on the terrain, trying not to turn this in to a total disaster. A couple of long agonizing minutes later and she is all mine. The face says it all!

C5BE1rk.jpg

A trip of a life time, tired and exhausted, deeply satisfied we are on the retrieve back home. Laughing and already reminiscing, celebrating this wicked day. Having the chance to meet the king up close and personal was an incredible experience. It feels like once you successfully handled a fish of this magnitude there is no challenge left that can't be tackled anymore.

#281691 HERE COMES THE BOOM...

Posted by Bassassins on 30 August 2013 - 09:19 PM

Chevy and I have been trying to hit the water all year and unfortunately we couldn't get things together.  With him heading back to school in a week we FINALLY found a day that we both had off to go hut some Largies.

Oddly the Smallies didn't get the memo....

BUT thankfully Chevy is a Largie whisperer and know exactly where they were hiding...

Let the games begin...

I told Chevy it wouldn't be a day of fishing if I didn't see that smile... so he caught one worth smiling about.

kiHhEXN.jpg

I had to step up my game in the presents of the whisperer and catch the highlight!

jV83PJd.jpg

... we had a couple of curve balls that ended our day a little early - I will leave that report to Chevy! Not the BOOM we wanted!!! All and all an amazing morning on the water and the wait was definitely worth it.  Hopefully it won't take a whole season for us to get back on the water again together soon ... that smile I just have to see in person again. LEGENDARY!!!

Thanks for a great day Chevy ... until next time!  Tight Lines....

Not a fishing report but something we are super excited about! We had the opportunity to write an article for Fishing-Headquarters Magazine on wading for river smallmouth.  Check out the whole magazine but make sure to catch page 49 ;) - we really hope you enjoy the read.

#273880 Monkey off my back...

Posted by Bassassins on 04 July 2013 - 01:48 PM

With Basstard still stuck at work I hooked up with John D on the JDB for some St. Lawrence River action. Obviously the stories of this water system had me pumped for the possibility of a new PB! Zero sleep, early morning pick up - sounds like the start of an epic adventure to me.

We were on the water Wednesday around 6am and conditions were incredible; low wind, overcast and mild weather. Leaving the ramp we hit our first spot without even getting on the big motor so we can consider this off the dock I guess. About 10 casts in, John already with 2 small bass in the boat, I was bouncing a tube across bottom in 25fow when I just feel weight at the end of my line. Keeping tension on I inform John that I had snagged up on something but it seemed to be moving a bit. Our short conversation of whether or not I was stuck was interrupted by a minute long line screech which determined I was in fact not snagged. This beauty of a pike came to the boat and I start the day with this beast, a new PB pike for me at a thick 37inches, on a tube - thank you St. Lawrence.

2w5vgco.png

We blasted off from there and fished a cane system we noticed another boat on down river. Fishing 6fow my tube quickly produced my first bass, it wasn't anything big which seemed to be the trend on this stretch. Fish after fish but all clones between 1-2 pounds.... Moving on.

2q80h1d.png

Our next location was again a shallow cane system but this time with some pads. John had success here in the past for both largies and smallies so expectations were high. Unfortunately the clones had followed us all the way down river, crazy! So with those small guys and another pike we knew something was up, the big ones obviously weren't in shallow. At this point we had boated a dozen fish but not the big ones we were hunting. John got on the electronics and found us a deep hump to target next. Great decision for the captain who landed this spawned out female - a huge fish that would be incredible to see again in fall.

2lwq5ao.png

The hump produced a couple more fish but the bite seemed to slow off as the sun finally broke through the clouds. We ripped off back towards the first location in hopes of hitting some shallow water again now that the sun was out. Easily the best decision of the day - turning a good morning of over 20 fish into an unforgettable day on the water with over 40 fish in the JDB.

John picked up the biggest of the day with this massive bass early in our approach to the flats...

2zs0lte.png

When released she thought she was ok to "hide" on bottom in 8fow, not in the St. Lawrence, I still can't get over just how clear it was.

2vl0g47.png

John had me beat on size all day but I won't complain about fish like this.

33upyfa.png

20uwolw.png

The last couple of hours in this trip was amazing, the type of fishing days we dream of. Fish after fish, some size, lots of action and for me it really got the "monkey off my back". The start of the bass season hasn't been the nicest to me. I have been getting on fish but not what I have been looking for in quality or quantity. Feeling like an athlete in a slump that needed a change I resorted to shaving my beard, wearing my underwear inside out and even carrying around a lucky lure in my pocket. Let's hope we are done with that.

My biggest came as an exclamation point at the end of AN AWESOME DAY...

2py4vtl.png

Thank you John for getting me out in the JDB and putting us on some fish, its always a pleasure but this day was something special. My first experience with the St. Lawrence was amazing and I can't wait for the next time.

Bye for now... Tight Lines!

#273248 Marvelous Musky

Posted by Bassassins on 26 June 2013 - 04:58 PM

The weather has been all over the place this summer and that has been moving the water levels up and down in some of our favourite fishing spots. Today we were finally able to hit our home stretch for some bass and ended up with this HUGE surprise in the shallows of the Rideau. She must have been hungry to hit Basstards soft plastic but we won't complain. PB for the Bassassins at 47" and a fish we won't soon forget.

Check out the amazing video because anything I write won't give it justice. A quick little CPR .... ENJOY!

#271323 Sayin hello to an old friend....

Posted by Bassassins on 23 May 2013 - 07:57 PM

It was a wild and perfect day, little sleep 'cause your brain will keep you up all night thinking about all the fun things you'll do tomorrow.

4am, rise and shine, grab our gear and out we role. The 30 minute drive to the beloved Miss flies by in anticipation, not just because its Pike and Walleye opener, but also due to the generous donation of CEO Sean White from Militant Outdoors.

f0pxg0.jpg

The Bassassins have themselves a boat but not just any kind of boat. Its the perfect vessel, refurbished to shine again in her full glory, swift as the wind and quiet as a mouse we embark the banks of the river.

The mist still lingers over the glass like waters, one pull and the engine purrs like a kitten, dashing forward towards our hunting grounds.

n43lf.jpg

Pike opener was long awaited and the whole expedition reeked of success, the first cranks cut through the air with a thin whistle. It doesn't take long for first contact.

fbewc0.jpg

Andre drew first blood, no monster but the skunk is off.  We continue the morning picking pike and walleye from the shallow weedy bays. Shallow cranks, big spinner baits and bright coloured spoons are the key to stir up a morning ruckus. We like to ring the alarm clock as its breakfast in bed for the toothy critters.

6xrjmo.jpg

Carefully watching out for schools of bait fish under distress, we quietly hit and run the shorelines. Every spot seems to produce fish and keeps us occupied but we were still waiting on the big one.

2vj3h91.jpg

As noon approaches and the early morning feeding frenzy unfolds in to full blown lunch feast the pike get more aggressive. Up sizing the bait with a faster presentation doesn't seem to scare off the little ones.

As I release another teen age esox, Smooth is on to something. A big wake follows the shallow crank but misses it by a second.  Cast again, same general direction, the Xcallibur hits the water, followed by a mad smash, he's on! He simply couldn't resist!

Nice fat male, looked like he just had a bull frog for lunch.

dfy52u.jpg

Well over 2 dozen toothy gators make it too the boat,

Andre hits the jackpot with a nice old bruiser of a perch that hammered one of the custom made large spoons.

Greedy bugger!

fp5xyt.jpg

Time to leave the water comes way too soon, Smooth and I manage a few back to backs on the way to the peer. Sometimes its not about breaking records but a day full of constant action is always welcome in our books! Hell it still beats sitting on the couch getting fat!

wwj6g9.jpg

Next on the menu are monster eyes, more pike and the illusive gar!
