Can someone tell me what hatch this is and what fly this is?

25 April 2017 - 12:02 AM

Hey guys. At one of my local creeks I fish there was a pretty decent hatch going on this evening. I do my best to match whatever is hatching based on hatch charts in my area, but I am not very good at identifying hatches as they happen. One of the mayflies landed on me so I took a picture. I also included a picture of a fly I used early last season that worked pretty well, and when this hatch happened tonight I had fish rising with it. I don't even remember where I got this pattern, but I only have one left.

Could anyone tell me what this mayfly is, and if you can, identify what fly pattern this is. I want to say its some sort of hendrickson. I also attached a picture of the fish I was targeting in a specific run where I noticed the hatch start!

Cheers, thanks guys!

And yes, I realize the hook is broken on that fly (snagged on a log). Hence, the reason I want to find out what it is lol!

Algonquin Park- Small streams

12 February 2017 - 11:12 PM

Although there are many posts on the forum about Algonquin, I do have a question about small stream fishing up there. I am planning a trip for the summer to photograph birds and other wildlife in the park, but I am also wanting to bring along my 3wt to try to get into some streams for brookies. Now I am not looking for any specific locations, but my question is, do I have to venture off the HWY60 corridor to find small streams (from looking online it seems like many big lakes rather than streams)? I am unfamiliar with the park which is why I ask. It seems that the more popular locations are on or around hwy 60. If anyone has any info that would be fantastic. If you are kind enough to direct me to an area, don't be shy to PM me.

Cheers.

Dry fly hackle (elk hair caddis)

24 December 2016 - 02:14 PM

Been getting into tying smaller flies as of late, mostly caddis and mayfly patterns, but I just cant seem to find any hackle that is short enough. Im finding that they are way too long and it looks dumb. What is the best kind of hackle for these flies? If anyone could give me a link or just a place that sells it that would be great! Cheers.

Carp on the Fly!

31 October 2016 - 06:00 PM

Came across like 15 or 20 carp when I was out this morning. I usually just walk past them and don't even think to go for them, but today I said why not! Put on a black BH bugger, casted in front of them and let it sit for a second and then twitched it once, and game on! Only the second time a fish has taken me into my backing, it was quite the fight. Thought I would share it with you guys.

Cheers!

What's your go-to Steelhead leader setup?

28 September 2016 - 02:32 PM

Hey guys,

Been on the fly for about 3 years now but really want to get into the steelhead this season. In the fall season I have only hooked up with Chinook and was lucky enough to get that Atlantic a few weeks back on an egg fly pattern. Im really going to try hard to get into the steel this fall/winter and was just wondering what kind of leader-to-tippet setups you guys are using? In the past I've used the Rio products salmon steelhead tapered leader, but have heard lots about building your own leaders. Im fishing mostly in Lake O tribs. Will be throwing many things such as buggers, egg sucking leeches, egg flies, stoneflies, etc. I have done some asking around and reading various websites and have a general idea of what I will run, but just wanted to get some feedback from you guys! Cheers.
