Topics I've Started

Tobermory, ON

07 August 2013 - 10:45 PM

Hey guys,

Going camping up in Tobermory this coming weekend and curious as to what the fishing's like there if any of you have been? Most likely fishing from the shore, not sure which spot/area yet perhaps someone can make some recommendations, and may also be fishing on a canoe as well.

Anyone been? Suggestions? I'd imagine there's some good fish there.

Fishing Rod

01 August 2013 - 11:03 PM

I've got about 4 cheap rod/reel combos from Wal-Mart and Canadian Tire, my most expensive being only $29.99, the Shimano one from Wal-Mart which I've been trying lately and casts the farthest, no issues yet.

However, considering I've spent maybe close to $300 on lures most of which I don't use because I always find one I hear is better than the last and there's never enough time to try them all often, I figure I may as well invest in a really good rod at this point.

You're probably going to ask me a million questions ranging from what fish do I want to catch to what kind of fishing I do. I don't need/want one specific to one species or made only for shore fishing or off a boat. There's got to be a good rod/reel that's generic in the sense I can use it while fishing from shore/piers or off my kayak, and for all species.

Any suggestions?

Port Credit Fishing Event

31 July 2013 - 05:31 PM

A couple so far are interested, we're planning on hitting up Port Credit Friday morning, hoping to reach for 6AM at the latest, and kill a couple hours.

Who's down?

And if you can't make it on a weekday or this Friday in particular, state the most convenient day in your case and we'll try and set up another get together which hopefully fits everyone's availability.

Claireville Conservation Area / Brown Bullhead

31 July 2013 - 05:22 PM

Went to try it out again today for an hour, second time. Went last week, spent about three hours, caught four brown bullheads approximately 6 inches give or take, my father-in-law caught another six. We were using worms. I tried screwing around with other lures like spinners, crankbaits, etc. and nothing. Today I caught another four brown bullhead, same size roughly. Have yet to find any other species there, but if you like brown bullheads, this is the place for you.

Will posts photos and maps of spot I was at, it was fun for a place only 15 minutes from my girlfriends place, but the next trip there may be the final.

Port Credit

30 July 2013 - 10:01 PM

Had that itch again today, wasn't able to head up to Sturgeon Lake so I figured I'd try out Port Credit, this would make it my second time there.

I get there, only to see a sign stating "No fishing" and suggesting an alternative location at JC Saddington Park.

So I played around for a bit, tried different lures, and after 45 minutes, nothing. Made my way along the rocks towards the south side, spoke to a couple of anglers there, they say they typically catch carp, catfish, silver bass, pike, and some salmon there. Also stated in a week or so salmon should be around there. One suggested I use a shiny chrome lure, so I began using my spinner. I was there 30 minutes trying it out, the others had been there twice as long and were more experienced than I, and no one was catching anything but fresh air.

Then, as I'm packing my gear to leave, this guy who had just arrived, caught a small silver bass.

Anyway, what's salmon fishing like? I hear they give a good fight. What lures work best for them? And during the salmon "run", are there really that many of them around there?

I'm going to try again next week, will be buying a couple shiny silver lures.
