alternatives to centerpins

13 September 2013 - 08:28 PM

i was thinking about this a while ago.

instead of using centerpins, why doesnt anyone use lever brake spinning reels?

or the more accurate name is ISO rod and ISO reel.  shimano and daiwa both make them.

with a pin, all you have is a wheel with line.
with an iso reel, you have a modern spinner with front drag, but still have option of letting it freespool to drift and/or exact control over the line.

no fish, so i build a rod.

04 September 2013 - 07:07 PM

due to recent skunk streak, i temporarily give up on fishing until i see people actually catching things.
so with my free time i finally took time to wrap some of the blanks i have here.

this ones a Seeker 7'2" Hercules Inshore Heavy.
full set of solid titanium Amtak Virtus Lite guides with a solid titanium fuji tip.

spiral wrapped.   all business, no fancy wraps. eva foregrip, flocked shrinktube rear for weight savings.

the last pic, mounted my daiwa saltiga z20 reel for a quick flex.   lockdown drag at or near 20lbs, high sticking it. and the line is peeling off reel.
rod still has plenty of power remaining.

:D :D :D

how many of you wrap your own rods?

stores with rod building supplies

02 August 2013 - 10:24 PM

hey, does anybody know of stores close by downtown toronto or around close enough.
that carries parts and supplies to build rods.  im trying to wrap these few seeker hercule inshore blanks i have here but need a few things.

vertical jigging.

27 July 2013 - 01:50 PM

im a big fan of vertical jigging in saltwater..

done it for striped bass, amberjacks, tuna, barracudas, cod, etc etc etc.

ive used all sorts of jigs ranging from 1.5oz to about 24oz for deep or heavy current.

even tried using a homemade jig from a stainless steel butter knife.  haha  (they do work)

anybody here also enjoy this method of fishing?

does anyone here practice this on lake ontario?
have your own boat or know where i can hop on a boat to employ this method to fish?
