In Topic: Is a 30hp motor strong enough
01 February 2015 - 12:51 PM
Hey guys. Looking for some knowledge. I am looking for a new boat and have come across a 16 foot aluminum boat that has a 30hp merc 4 stroke on it. I am not sure if it is or will be strong enough. Mostly I am fishing by myself or maybe with 1 other person. The boat has a dry weight of around 600 lbs.
Just looking for some advice.
Thanks.
I have a 15 foot aluminum with a 15hp 4 stroke that I use on smaller lakes. I put a whale tail on the motor and it gets up really well- even with two guys, a trolling motor, and a ton of fishing gear. If the motor is in good shape it should be more than enough, just check the transom and HP rating on the boat. If its a wide beam it should work well.

I also have a 6wt 9' allen Compass fly rod to pair with. Whole package for $220! Happy to supply pics, even a bill of sale for those of you wary of a new member selling things that are 'Brand New'!

I'm looking for something similar but also to be used as general fly rod. Soo many options...
Hey Paul1913,
I recently ordered a 9' 6wt allen compass rod and 5-6wt allen trout II reel (thinking I'd use it for steel head), but I was thinking of returning it for a heavier set up that would work better for musky. It hasn't even come out of the box yet, so if you're interested in either let me know. I don't want to go through the hassle of sending it back and dealing with shipping to the states etc.
