I had a 7' mh that I bought from Walmart for like $50 it was a decent rod and reel, used it for bass and pike. My favourite however is my ultra light combo shimano Sedona reel and scimitar rod. I've caught pike, bass and walleye with this rod and it has never let me down.
If you are looking for bass, a good spot to go is where the grand and speed river meet behind the Preston auditorium. A friend of mine and I would get in the speed river at the beer store in Preston and walk through the river until we got to that area. It was always a good day out. There are a few holes in that area. I always use ultra light rod and reel (so much fun) and either small panther Martin spinners or small tube jigs. The fish aren't monsters but they sure are fun.
