9.7.2016 - Lake Couch

08 September 2016 - 10:16 AM

I decided to do some video for my Orillia Fishing project, I got to the lake late as I had to drop my kid off to school and load the boat. The night before had rain, I'm unsure if there was any thunder or lighting. The morning was stinking hot and had cloud cover, not a breeze in sight. I decided to take the trip to couch since I was too lazy to really make a trip to a weedier lake. To my surprise, they had installed all new docks at the ramp and the lake had really good weed cover! I hadn't been on this lake for about a month now and those weeds had just exploded!

I didn't even get very far out into the lake before I stopped. The whole lake looks fishable right now. I stopped to fish some weeds just off a channel but didn't have much success. I decided to run down the lake a bit to find some rock/weed mix. I had been fishing for about an hour trying to figure out if the fish were deep or shallow. We've had some cold nights and other fishing forum's have said the fish were starting to move out. I tried some 30ft areas but was unproductive.

Keeping with my jerkbait, I moved into some 10ft areas where there was some rocks mixed with weeds. I got my first largemouth, who came up from the shadow area between where the rock and weeds meet. He was very tentative, just coming up to it and looking. I paused for longer than I normally do and he nipped at the back, it was just enough to hook him though. Looks like the fish are going to be picky today.

I kept the jerkbait and decided I'd add some longer pauses in there to see if I could keep getting fish on it. I threw it up on a rock, like in 2" of water and jerked it one time - a smallie nailed it. He put up a good fight be he wasn't as big as I had hoped. I continued to work the area but as I moved in, the fish didn't bite. I saw lots of follows and threw in Senko's to try and get them to commit but no luck.

I decided to work the rest of the area with the senko and managed to catch a little guy on it but that was all the action that I saw.

The skies were starting to get darker and the clouds moved back in. I figured I'd try a little top water action since there still wasn't any wind. I moved back out towards deeper water, still in about 10-15ft of water. I caught a small smallie who just slammed it! I continued to fish the rest of the area, moving back out towards the deeper water but didn't get anymore bites.

I was hoping for some bigger fish but all in all the action was on par with how this area of the lake has fished with me in the past. I sure do need to work on finding the bigger girls but hey, anytime out is a good time right?!
