It's not a matter of visibility it's just being able to see if I'm dragging bottom when trying to set float depth for proper presentation. Seems to always look like its floating straight up.

In Topic: Skunked on Opener? Vent here...

25 April 2016 - 08:38 AM

I tend to have a love hate relationship with opener. So my opener went like this I tied about 250 bags as my close friend fly fishes and I brought my step father who uses a spinning reel and a float but won't buy roe lol. I'm fine with tying the bags gets me excited. So Saturday morning no one would wake up early then all slept in and left me waiting in anticipation just to get to the river and be let down but not being able to find a spot. Once I got a spot i lost a fish and got one. I had several hits that I set the hook on and there was nothing there but my bag was destroyed. Which leaves me to wonder if there is something I'm not seeing before my float drops. I brushed up on my Russian and on a many Russians who feel the need to cuddle when there is a whole river to fish. So Sunday comes and no one wants to get up again so I just make a crazy amount of noise and make sure they get up. We head for a specific few pools only to find that people had slept on them that night. So we got the same spot we had the day before and I missed one and then had people show up and crowd us again. My friend decided to try his pin out since he got skunked the day before and he lost one. Due to the over crowding I started to play with my friends fly rod in some shallow riffles and caught an Atlantic which I have never caught and I have never used a fly rod. It was a stocked 6" fish but was nice to see. We moved and my friend caught another Atlantic and fishing was slow and nothing to report for the rest of the day. I learned many things about my rig and opener as I do every year. All in all had fun and caught a fish on my new Milner which was a dream to use.

hmmm what you just said makes sense. I know I had seen them in the same catalog online. Must of been theirs. I fished with gram bristow this November and he is sponsored by raven and fished drennan leaders and I guess I just made the assumption they were same company. But same distributor makes more sense. Thanks for the correction and clarification.

Haven't fished them, fish the drennan loafers but drennan is made by raven so you should be getting the same quality your use too. I believe they are their economical floats as stated above. I fished with a well known guide up in the Georgian Bay Area who swears by the raven floats but that could be because they don't cost as much when his clients loose them.

In Topic: Leader, Shot Line, and Float Rigging Question

I use to rig just mainline with float to swivel and then to leader with Shot on it. But went fishing with a guide and he set me up main line 10# with float to swivel to shot line 6# ( he liked to use same size shot) to swivel to leader 3# with hook/ bait. I liked this idea so I'm keeping it this way. Might up the leader and I'm not sure I like his same size shot might taper. His shot lines were 2-3' and he pre rigged them at home and threw them on a walleye worm harness holder. Leaders were about the same in length. Float can be slide up the line to fish deeper pools.
