Advice on a 'short' rod......

11 April 2016 - 04:56 PM

I visit my in-laws in Pennsylvania several times a year. They have a nice stream at the bottom of their property which is about 25ft wide with high banks and gets populated with trout at the start of the season. There's a good walk-in point at their side but lots of tall trees right at the bank with a few overhanging the stream. I presently own a 9ft 5wt rod which I think is maybe a bit too tall for this application.

So, I was considering buying a shorter rod - maybe around 6 or 7ft for this application.

I'm undecided though, on line weight. I've read that at the 6-7ft length, to go 3 wt however, I see 5wt rods at this length too and I assume I could use my 5wt reel here.

Any/all thoughts and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Comments and suggestions for a rod (and reel) are also appreciated.

My First Five Flies Tied Be Me (Today)

02 April 2016 - 05:42 PM

I spent today at Grindstone Angling in Waterdown (Ontario) doing a basic Fly Tying session. I got to tie a Black Woolly Bugger, Caddis Dry, Hare's Ear Nymph, Rick's Caddis and a San Juan Worm. My handywork is shown on attached photo. Had a great day, great teacher and great fun !

My New Trout Flies (for those interested) from Scotland

01 April 2016 - 06:37 PM

Being from Scotland, I keep in touch with many of the friends I grew up with. A few have been fly fishing for many years so, I've had a few conversations with them regarding my new hobby over the past few months.

On recommendation, I bought the flies from Grays of Kilsyth, Grantown On Spey.

Today, I received the last of two parcels. I now have four boxes of what is my first trout flies - one assorted, one wet, one dry and one with nymphs. I've attached a few photo's for all to see.

I'm in awe of the beauty of these things and hoping that some day I can tie a few like them.

If anyone is looking for flies from Scotland (a collector maybe ?), my friend also recommends an EBay seller called " moonshineflytyer".

WTB: Good Quality Fly Tying Vise with Base Plate

31 March 2016 - 05:58 PM

I'm looking for a well looked after quality brand fly tying vise with base plate.

I'm taking a few classes at Grindstone Angling and would like to continue it as a hobby.

Hopefully, I don't need to spend big money.

Thanks in advance.

I'm located in Mississauga.
