Redfin Pickerel

28 April 2016 - 11:23 PM

Hey guys,

Landed this little beauty and was hoping to get some confirmation that it is indeed a Redfin pickerel.

If so, I was doing some reading and adults max out at 16" 2.25lbs.

I didn't have a scale or tape on me at the time to measure, but this one easily hit 16" and I'm thinking more like 18".

The photos aren't perfect but...

Any thoughts?

Thought all the Toronto urban fishermen might find this interesting and perhaps trigger some day dreams  :)

Beginner Steelheader spin reel setup

13 April 2016 - 10:57 AM

Found this encouraging article for starters like me who can't get their hands on a CP yet :???: . Thought this might prove helpful for other greenhorns.

I'll be practicing small drifts and slowly increasing in range as I practice free spooling the line with the bail up. Apparently this is the old way lol, but oh well..

I've also run into difficulties with line twist, and I think my problem was a missing swivel or two (or even a larger swivel perhaps) to avoid the constant twist and potential for bird nesting.

I was out yesterday and the water was high, fast, muddy and it was windy; extremely difficult conditions with this sort of setup, I quickly realized. Much to learn!

Hello everyone,

This forum has me hooked and learning at an incredible rate; stuff you can't learn from books.

I fished pike, bass and panfish for recreation as a kid quite a lot (Wolfe island) and then lost touch with it until last year. Living close to the humber and discovering the steelheader community has got my juices flowing again.

Never caught a trout in my life, but can't wait. Could only afford a 8'6 Okuma Celilo (8-17lbs) rod with an okuma trio 30s spin reel for now until I can get into centerpins; so I can have some variety when trout aren't available.

So I'll be joining the rest of the rookies in asking questions on using a spin setup for float drifting.

Glad to be here,
