I live in the Brantford area. Grand River country.
I'm a bit of a late bloomer when it came to fishing. It became a hobby in my late twenties when a coworker asked a few guys at work to go Walleye fishing in Sturgeon Lake, in the Lindsay area. The friend that got the group together, had been going up to Sturgeon Lake with his much older Uncle and a few of his old fishing buddies. I hadn't even had my Fishing Licence. I acquired it, and dropped a few bucks on some basic tackle, and Bob's your Uncle. We used to do two trips a year, up to Sturgeon. Once in May, once in October. We'd rent a little cottage and a 14' Pontoon boat from a place called Lunge Haven Cottages. Fell in love with fishing pretty fast, of course. Skip ahead a few years and now most of the guys who went on that trip are married with children, and finding time to get away is a lot harder than it should be. One of the guys bought a 14" Aluminum boat and trailer in 2009, off Kijiji. I went with him the day he picked it up. As luck would have it, he had gotten to the point where the boat was just an ornamental decoration in his garage. So I convinced him to sell it to me late last year. While he owned it, it never had more than a 55lbs thrust electric-trolling motor propelling it through the water - usually Waterford ponds. I made the decision to purchase a new 15HP Suzuki outboard for it, which I should be picking up on Friday morning. Then the plan is to find a lake to fish on Saturday - probably Rice Lake.
I've been going to Rice Lake over the past 3 years. I rent a boat (at $100 a day) from one of the Cottage resorts on the South-East side of the lake. I've done it 8 times - which is why it wasn't too hard to convince my wife to let my buy the boat off my buddy. If you can keep the weeds off your hooks, you're bound to catch something. My most successful technique has been to let the breeze drift the boat through the lake, and I make constant casts and retrieves perpendicularly to the direction I'm moving. So the lure (usually a shallow running crank) makes several "cuts" through the water as the wind is moving us along. I find I can cover a lot of water this way.
