Trolling Motor Battery

05 May 2017 - 11:01 AM

Hi all,

I am in the market for a battery to power a 45lb thrust trolling motor that will be pushing a 12' inflatable. I have done some research on the various types and am still hung up between choosing a flooded/wet or AGM deep cycle. I am leaning towards 100AH+... so either Group 27 or 31 (unless someone can argue I will not use this much). I typically will only be out on the water for 2-6 hours on large pond type settings... and paddling is not the end of the world. As far as the AGM vs wet debate is concerned, I do not mind the battery maintenance but I am worried about the battery acid spillage during usage in an inflatable boat. The local dealer I found for a WET battery mentioned something about it being contained? Would this negate the spillage?

The best prices I have found so far are:

$375 for 105AH Group 31 AGM - Canadian Tire

$177 for 105AH Group 31 WET - Local Dealer

$130 for 115AH Group 27 WET - Costco

*Prices are CDN with taxes in

In short... I could use some insight towards the AGM vs wet debate as well as sizing 80-110AH (Group 24-31) for my application.

Thank you in advance

Old Ausable Channel

26 September 2016 - 04:59 PM

So the family just bought a cottage right next to the Old Ausable Channel in Grand Bend. Has anyone fished this stretch before? Any place around that someone is familiar with?

From what I have researched, perch, LMB, and grass pickerel are the dominant species in the stretch. It's a cutoff section of the Ausable River which has become stagnant and is filled with lots of vegetation making it similar to a long skinny pond.

Excited to get out and see what's in there.

Help: Fishing in London

28 August 2016 - 08:28 PM

Hi all,

Girlfriend just moved to London and we recently tried the Thames at Greenway Park and Springbank Dam between the islands and the dam itself. Long story short, we got skunked, which surprised me regardless of going on a hot day between 1-5 in the afternoon.

I am heading up there again this week and we will be going at night this time. Have been reading about a few other spots, as I am more accustomed to ponds and lakes than rivers. Considering the Westminster ponds and Pond Mills, or head back to the Thames in a new spot as everything I read is positive about the river.

Does anyone know if there are shore fishing spots on either of these pond areas? Parking lots around?

Any tips for the thames? Usually have a good grasp on targeting bass, but I'm hoping the "skunking" last time was due to the time of day.

Trying to get the girlfriend hooked on fishing, need some help!

Thanks!

Orangeville Area Fishing?

29 June 2016 - 07:47 PM

Hey all,

A few buddies and myself are looking at fishing around Orangeville this coming weekend. We don't have a working boat at the moment so we will be shore fishing. Personally, I have the most interest in Bass and Pike.

So far we have been looking at Island Lake right in Orangeville or Belwood lake in Fergus just 20 minutes west. I have done some online research and Belwood (the Grand River + Lake area) seems to have mixed reviews, while Island Lake has thumbs up all around.

Any help on the two lakes, or any other recommended lakes, would be great!

Thanks!

Help: Reel + Line combo

20 June 2016 - 12:40 PM

Hi all,

Relatively new to fishing and have a question for you. I have been having trouble with my line becoming twisted, as it seems it is constantly "jumping" off the reel when I'm casting, leaving it to become a tangled mess.

I have been doing some reading online about line and reel combos, but have not been able to come to a general conclusion. I have been thinking about going to a braided line as I read it is less prone to tangles as it has little to zero memory. I mostly fish trout and bass in small to medium sized lakes.

Here are the specs of my reel and current line:

Spinning Reel: lb(kg) - yrds (m) 6(2.7) - 210(190) 8(3.6) - 170 (155)
DIA (mm) - m 0.25 - 190 0.28 - 155

Line: Monofilament - DIA 0.30mm - 10lbs test - Sufix Pro Select

I guess my question would be: What type of line should I be using? Dia and test? Do I need a leader?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
