    Your tactics for finicky smallmouth

Going up north this week and the bass always give me a hard time, especially during the day.. I find the fishing is good at the few hours around dusk and dawn but other than those times I usually get skunked. I usually fish for them with a drop shot rig, or just a standard split shot and hook...

Beginner Fisher, not having much luck

Yeah I tie on my leaders the same way as you because I don't like the swivel so high up, makes it hard to cast without messing up your guides like you said, If I absolutely need a swivel, i'll tie it as close to my lure as possible

What time do you go fishing? Morning, afternoon, evening, night?

These are the times where the smallies feed like crazy on my lake, basically the only time you can catch bass, and the best time for lakers too pike/steelhead/salmon I'm not too picky about the time.

Beginner Fisher, not having much luck

lots of great advice here for a lake like wilcox, look for weeds, stay relatively close to shore, and throw your bobber in where you see an opening in some lilies. I would stick to worms and live bait, they're easy to rig and will catch fish when artificials just won't. as fishingnoob pointed...

got my first mystery tackle box

I felt the same way as you before I started fishing this shallow weedy lake near my cottage, it's full of little pike. I kept throwing spoons, inline spinners, floating rapalas and everything would get snagged.. So I tried a couple of spinnerbaits and was amazed at how weedless they are, you...

So basically, fishing get's hot before the season opens.

I should have been clearer, in certain zones they have extended the bass season this year, not zone 16 here's whats new for 2013, extended bass seasons in zone 17, 18, 20 http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/stdprodconsume/groups/lr/@mnr/@letsfish/documents/factsheet/stdprod_101636.pdf

So basically, fishing get's hot before the season opens.

These warm summers or short winters apparently have had a positive affect on bass populations, that's why the season opened earlier this year. I wonder how it affects pike/steelhead/salmon though, can't be good for them, although maybe it doesn't have such a drastic effect because in summer...

    Paddle4Walleye

Thanks! this information was incredibly helpful, I'm gonna try the same tactics for walleye at my lake this year, I have never caught a walleye, and would love to, I've been canoeing since I was a little kid but the guy you mentioned probably was in the same boat as me, makes you think.. I'm...

Heading down to Humber Bay Park - Downtown Toronto

Good luck! and let us know how it goes If i was fishing around there with a worm, I would fish the sheltered bays/islands on the east side

Heading down to Humber Bay Park - Downtown Toronto

you're allowed to fish there.. it's a public park and its not really downtown, I fish there for pike all the time (because I live 15 minutes away and drive by often) and never catch anything, there are fish there though, just have to try I would try the east side as there are some nice bays, or...

    Daiwa Procyon rod

just grabbed this from le baron's because I broke my spinning rod, I've never owned anything daiwa but this rod was 7", and rated for 1/4-1 oz lures, which is perfect for me, and somewhat hard to find in spinning rods, they usually throw lures only up to 3/4 or even 5/8. Just used it once, and...

    Favourite lure of all time

mepps spinners all the way, they catch so many different species
  18. apz245

    Using smaller spoons

I'm pretty sure they're supposed to wobble too, which is why I see the spinning as an issue, I've heard tons of people praise weedless spoons for pike, i'm long overdue to grab a few

    Using smaller spoons

I'm gonna do some experimenting and let you guys know, I have a bad habit of reeling my spoons too fast, but sometimes you need to, to avoid those snags/weeds.

cool vid smackum, only problem I have with loons is the ones on my lake get lazy and forget to do their loon call and chalkhorse, I offered resistance at first too because it's really not something I knew how to react to immediately, it really catches you by surprise as you obviously know...
