first thing that has to be said... if you don't feel safe doing what you're doing, then don't do it. When the rivers freeze up to the seam, thats ideal. The fish sit under the ice shelf, just out of the fast(er) water. run your float as close to the shelf as you can. Thats usually your best...

The more you respect you gear the longer it will respect you back lol. I just bring mine in and hang to dry. Leaving them in your car is a big no- no. After salmon season I hang em on the roof racks of my car and they get the hose, big time. I use dish hand soap and scrub em down, does the trick.
