    First rod build w/ pics

To get started it was about 4 bills. That's using a $100 blank (which is fairly cheap), cheapish guides. I got a $80 rod dryer which isn't necessary, you could just do a diy thing or borrow someones. Some of the things will last multiple rods, like epoxy, finish, etc, so you won't need to buy...

    First rod build w/ pics

At 14' it's no feather in hand but it is still fairly light, much lighter than the 15' streamside. It's rated 4-8 but I've used 10lb leader on it this fall with the reel clamped down and felt the rod had more power left. Haven't had much time with 6lb leader but it should be able to handle it...

    First rod build w/ pics

Doesn't seem like much rod building going on on OFF so I thought I'd post some pics of my first build, from this summer. Will be starting my second build soon. And the blank doing it's job on a little one...

Thanks once again for the great service Fishheads! Ordered Sunday evening, and arrived in Niagara by midday Wednesday.

    2015 El Niño effect

Agreed! I've been ice fishing a few times-it's alright, keeps me sane when the rivers are locked up. Last year I went twice, the first day I had a hut booked locally, and it was -40 out. Yay. Second time I sat all day long on simcoe and didn't get a bite, was going for lakers. This year it'll be...

    Shot line.

Neither do I. A shot line is just an interchangeable line with split shots. I keep some pre-rigged for different conditions. My guess is he's talking about his actual shotting pattern. Or the OP was using a high vis mainline straight to the leader, which could have been spooking fish.

New Rod & Centerpin - Basic Questions

Better for the environment. If you use backing then you could get over 5 spoolings out of that spool of raven. I think a spool of 100yds of backing is about $10. Remember that a spool of backing could last 10 years easy and many different reels.

New Rod & Centerpin - Basic Questions

definitely put backing on the reel, it will save you money and time in the long run. I like a lot of backing so that I only have to respool with 100-200 yds of mainline 2-3 times per year. Most stores or online stores like fishheads have dacron backing which is good stuff. I like to fill the...

    Another one

I understand. Take a look at the pic if you haven't already. Not completely sure if that's the case there but looks like it to me. I've seen it too much on the rivers. Guys carrying out their trout or posing for a pic with a decent fish and most of the fishes body weight hanging by the head...

    Another one

just because it swam away doesn't mean it'll live. If it's head is bent back like that I can't imagine it being alright. try to hold them by the tail and support their belly. Anything vertical is supposedly bad on their spine.

    Big Water

Was great to net your fish Paul :p The fish sure destroyed me yesterday. You didn't seem to have any problem banking them though! If you could try to keep the video the least "revealing" as possible, that'd be great. but no biggie either way, not that hard to find that spot anyway. Next time...

    Float fishing lines...

I fish the niagara. I use a 15 footer and a 14fter. I have 2 pins, one has: 20lb regular orange dacron backing - 12lb suffix promix - 8 or 10lb seaguar salmon and steelhead (yellow label). The other pin has the same backing - 10lb suffix promix or raven 10lb - 6-8lb leader. The 14' has serious...

I need advice for fishing with beads and spawn sacks

I agree with RR, ccheck out the raven website, specifically the shotting patterns. if you really want to use roe, use a natural cure or just buy it from fishheads. Not saying the pautzke doesn't work, but in clearer water I don't see the use in it. Clear water = smaller bags and beads. I barely...

    Float rod suggestions

I have the 12.9 matrix. It's a great rod, tons of backbone. Too much if you're fishing sub 5 or 6lb leaders for steel because the tip is really stiff. Great for salmon or power fishing steel-not so great fishing light lines in clear water. I try to fish 8lb + leader with it. But that's just me...

    Float fishing when it's windy

A bigger float should be more stable and wouldn't get pushed around as much. Make sure to have enough weight under it so that only the hi-vis top is showing. I suppose you could add an extra shot or two so that it rides a little lower.
