    Eating Salmon

Hey y'all, I'm going salmon fishing for the first time (Port Hope) and was wondering if the fish coming in through Lake Ontario are safe to eat. All opinions welcomed!

    Dollarama Gear

Thanks for posting this Grubman - I never knew Dollarama was such a boon for lures! I just went to the one in Aurora (thanks Odoyle!) and got about $30 of gear fro less than $6 after tax. I ill be going back. I got some Slurpie soft bait perch - I left y'all two bags so hurry up!

    Braid Advice

Thanks Float! I do have some 15lb fluro on the reel, I'll just take it down and tie on the braid. I was already planning to use the fluro as a leader - I know braid is highly visible. I'll take a look at all the brands you guys suggested. Thanks!

    Braid Advice

I'm going to be delving into the world of braided line and wanted to know what brands were trusted by everyone out there. The choices are overwhelming! I was leaning toward Spiderwire Flurobriad because of its sinkability. My spinning reel is rated at .25mm minimum, so that's what I'll be using...

    Casting Distance

Blair, Grubman, thanks for sharing your experience. I need the sage advice of the wizened ones. I do get caught up in the "heavier line heavier fish" menatlity. Also, thanks Grubman for stating " use 8 lb and never had a problem landing 20 or 30 lb fish." - I seriously would have got 20lb line...

    Casting Distance

Thanks for explaining that to me. I think I'm caught up on the whole fantasy of being prepared for "the big one", and loosing sight of basic physics! I'm going to re-spool my reel that had the 15lb line. Thanks for the advice!

    Casting Distance

I have two rods and (spinning) reels. Last weekend I found that Rod A (8lb mono on a 7ft. 12lb rod) was casting more than twice as far as Rod B (15lb fluro on a 7ft. 14lb rod), both with a 1/4oz. jig. I thought perhaps Rod A was just better, but when I switch the 8lb reel to Rod B (and the 15lb...

Abu Garcia Specialist combo - Yikes!

I never considered that. What would you suggest? I'm not looking to break the bank, but I don't mind spending a little for something that will do it's job for a long, long time.

Abu Garcia Specialist combo - Yikes!

My suggestion then would be to use the reel for 2 or 3 outings (however many it takes before the drag goes like it always does) then replace the reel with something cheap like a Shimano Sienna 2500 for $30-40. If you want something on the lower end of the quality reel category you could also...

    Line Slap

Thanks for all the replies. I'm just getting back into fishing after a 28-year 'hiatus' so I'm basically new to all of this. My rod weight is 12 lbs (again, I was told that getting a 15# line was OK). I'm not fishing for anything specifically - going to Bob's Lake in Westport/Burridge and...

    Line Slap

Don't know if this is the right section, but here goes... I just spooled my first spinning reel and the line is slapping just below the first guide when I reel it in. I'm using 15lb .381mm flurocarbon as my main line. Now my reel is rated for 14lb .35mm but the guy behind the counter at BPS...

    Knots

I did a little research and found that a lot of people use the double clinch knot (especially for flurocarbon) because it retains 100% of the line's strength. I'm using it now but have yet to land anything on it. Anyone have any experience/luck with that?

Abu Garcia Specialist combo - Yikes!

I thought I was getting a deal when Canadian Tire had the Abu Garcia Specialist combo on sale (from $80 to $50) about a month ago. After my fourth use today - snaporamovic! The rod broke just above where the two halves connect. I was using 8lb (mono) line to a swivel, to 10lb (fluro) leader to a...

Thanks for the recommendation. Those fish are on the list...

    Advice on good leader

I used the steel ones to be "ready" for anything that may hit my lure. I have already had one twist up on me and I can't for the life of me get it back to normal. I use it to practice casting now. How do you make a titanium leader, and at what diameter? It's pretty cool that the fish don't react...

    Advice on good leader

The 8lb is my main line. So without a (different) leader, I should just aid a swivel before attaching tackle? I will definitely look into the Raven and Phantom. Thanks NADO.

    Advice on good leader

Hey everyone! I just picked up freshwater fishing again after many years and needed some opinions on good flurocarbon leader. I'm currently using 8lb Trilene. My cousin (who has fished since he could walk) recommended using nylon-wraped leaders. After loosing three to the weeds and one to a...
