Man I hate crowded piers and ppl that don't bring their own net. Last year we were fishing in port hope in a very quiet spot in the middle of the night and these two guys come in and plop down right beside us when theres nobody either side 300ft each way. Neither guy brought a net. within 15 mins one of the guys gets a fish on but he wasn't paying attention and his rod goes flying into the river LoL luckily his buddy crossed his line and they retrieved the rod and we helped net their fish so we could continue our fishing. Im guessing these guys were middle eastern because they kept asking if the fish was Halal LoL i was like love would i know.

Your were looking for a rod last year did u get a new one?
I would like an st croix avid but could not justify the cost for using the rod for two months

yeah i was. i looked at fenwick 9'6 medium 10~20lb ...

i basically wanted something with little more backbone force those fishes little more with heavier line too...
I hated seeing people with light action rods who couldn't turn a fish... especially those using rods where butt end bends like crazy.

I remember many years ago when i first started pier fishing for salmon...
I used my 10'0 medium slow action shimano rod with a WHOPPING 50LB TEST BRAID (used what I had),,, casting distance sucked compare to 30lb that I used now (going down to 20 or lower did not increase cast distance) but I remember that I would never loose a spoon due to snag. I remember many times pulling out my cleo from snag and seeing my hook bent. haha. But with 30lb braid, I would break a line doing same, maybe i got a bad batch of line?

Than again,,, I think medium power rod with fast action rod is best. I also have a 8'6" MediumHeavy which I bought to let my brother use... never used it much. I did use it to catch few salmons previously... and you should surely horse the fish a little better but puts too much stress on my arms aswell and i have to work harder to keep the line from going slack due to stiff rod.

than I said... "i only use it for few weeks only, i'll just use and abuse what i got now"
 
I still do not understand all those ratings on the rods.
Maybe someone can explain to me better...?

For example, it's different brand of rod but...
brand #1 is 9'6" Medium power, fast action with 10~20lb line test
brand #2 is 9'6" medium power, fast action with 8~12lb only.

Someone told me to just look at the line rating before power/action. So 10~20lb rated rod is good for tossing heavier lures. But for heavier lures, should the rod have heavy or medium heavy power with fast action too? so that you can properly cast that damned heavy lure?
 
Just a quick question...when the salmon start staging to get ready for the run...is it possible to catch them in the afternoons? i mean is it hard because they might not be biting at that time? i only ask because man it gets busy and since i live so close i wanted to go when there is the least amount of people...i also wanna go when there are least amount of people because this is my first year fishing and i dont want people getting pissed off at me...i can go anytime, im jobless lol
 
When people stop fishing that usually means that the fish have moved out to deeper water. The best times are from 6PM to 7AM,unless you have an overcast day which extends the daytime bite.

rod: berkley lightning rod 8.6 medium spinning rod
reel: mitchel 300x
line: power pro 15pounds braid
lure: little cleos, crocodile spoon, j13

this works perfectly to me for pier fishing

for river fishing

rod: shimano clarus 13ft float rod
reel: mitchel 300x
line: i forgot what i have lol for its light 10pounds line and sren flouro carbon :)
lure: salmon roe bag. berkley pink worm

enjoy salmon season is coming so grab your rod lets go fishing YEahhhhhhhhhhhh :)

If you do encounter ppl fishing... Give ppl their space.. Don't cast over someones line.. when you have a fish on yell fish on.. and when playing your fish warn us which direction you are coming.. "Fish Coming up!! or Fish Coming Down" Ive seen many ppl get their lines in a bunch from new or rookie anglers who don't know what they are doing. You will learn alot from watching ppl around you or talking to some of the guys out there.
 
i think next week sunday and monday is gonna be very good at port credit thats when i think we are gonna get a lot of action because its suppose to rain the whole week that week
hopefully we can hook into some fish

Oh yeah, i seen people catch fish and whenever they have fish ON we all reel in our lines with an exception of a few people...because there are SOME people that never reel in their lines as a matter of fact they cast right where your fish is...most of the people there know who these people are and then you get tangled up and lose your fish...and man if i lose my first salmon i will be vexed.
 
wow 115 replies already...looks like everyone is pumped for the Fall run. Any heros gonna try fishing in the storms tonight? lol I wonder if it would be a good time to fish or not, definately not a safe time...but possibly a good time?lol
 
nado runs are happening all around gta tribs, small but nothing big, this storm tonight will help alot thats for sure. Who ever goes tonight be safe tornado watch for Mississauga :unsure:
