Sorry, no fish pics today, just nature shots of my first outing of 2014.
Was SOL when where I thought I was going to get live bait today was closed. Maybe not so bad afterall, as I spent the day familiarizing myself with using a sonar. This was my first ever ice fishing outing with a hut, sled + a fair walk and sonar. My previous ice fishing experience was very limited and I wasn't sure how I was going to like spending a whole day on the ice.
I was pleased that my ice ducer worked for my unit, so I didn't need to spend time fiddling around with the regular ducer trying to get it level. This is one area I didn't want to "Red & Green", though Knuguy, you'll have to explain to me how to mount a drive to the end of my auger. Was limited to one hole today and next time I want to be able to drill a bunch.
The drive in:
I jigged a large Williams Wobbler for most of the afternoon, with the odd small fish appearing on the sonar but nothing taking interest. For an entry level fish finder (PiranhaMax 175), I was amazed at how it could pick up even the smallest fish. I was fishing in 57 ft of water, and I actually had to turn down the sensitivity, because I didn't want it picking up every baitfish that swam by.
I had the whole lake to myself. It was cold, but the walk both ways had me sweating for a good chunk of the day. I don't know if my sonar would have functioned well had I chosen to spend the day outside of my hut drilling more holes.
A peaceful end, to a fun day:
I will be back, with live bait and an automatized auger.
