Steelhead Master
Kind of ironic now (that this warm spell is coming in), but a week ago everything was locking up on the GTA tribs. I hadn't been out in over two weeks. I booked some time off and reconnected with my roommate from University and we fished the Niagara for 3 days. His place is 15 minutes from the pool. and 5 minutes from the 'downer, ha ha ha.
Anyways.. in the search of open water trout, we were off to the elusively producing whirlpool (from our experiences anyways).
Monday January 7th
I rolled in late morning and we got to the pool for noon. We had a good first day.
First up was my 6lb steel. Everyone was smashing lakers so it was different to get a steel.
Then half an hour later my float dropped hard. I was out deeper running about 16 feet of line and SMASH. This aint no rock. Finally a laker I think. It surfaces and its dark. Hmmm still dont know. Ends up being a 10lb bow! Exciting
We then meandered around to another spot down there and to wrap up the day Mike lands the freshest, chromest, lake run brown I have ever seen. What a beauty!
Time to head back to his place for beers, and beers, and beers.
Tuesday January 8th
We got up at a decent time and were on the water for 11am.
Beautiful afternoon sky
No action for hours. No one out there was hitting anything. We were having a good time anyways, taking in everything. High spirits.
BOOM. float goes down. Im on. My first lake run brown with colors like this. The browns we got into were beautiful. Great action on my new 12'9 Raven Matrix
Mike was still facing a skunk on the day. Throws on some roe in the search for anything. Said he knew a hole the carp and suckers hide out in. I guess being a local you start to know some stuff.
