Frozenfire , I think you are right on the money . There are no barbels on the sides of the mouth and the dorsal is identical to a Buffalos .

Nice buff. Congratulations! You caught a smallmouth buffalo fish. There are not a lot of them in our waters. WTG!

There's a lesson here for those that preach "kill the carp" . Fish identification is not always easy and if that fish had fallen into the hands of someone that "euthanize's" carp. They would have killed it. A lose -lose situation all around. My thanks to the guys that caught it and practiced C&R.

Yep, that is definitely a buffalo, not a carp. Just look at the dorsal fin if you can't really see the barbs.
