went to the islands on wed and fished only 3:30 to 8:30
landed 1 bowfin 28 inches but the thickest, fattest bowfin i have ever seen.
lost 7 other bowfins...some trying to land ...some spit out the lures...some the hook did not quite set in their boney
mouths.
i am using artificial bait and some things they do not like the taste or texture of the baits and as fast as they suck them in they spit them out...who knew???? they are picky eaters...
ran into some guys who are customers of mine at the restaurant...they were having no luck...
took them on a small tour...showed them the value of polarized glasses and led them to huge carp
they landed the largest fish they had ever caught...hehe..i had fun guiding them....
the ferry is only running to wards...if you want to get to centre island or hanlans you gotta walk
the mnr guys are monitoring the islands for pike poachers...so do not even think about hunting pike.
i had the best bowfin fight ever as well as some battles i lost...awesome time
work is crazy and i am moving downtown may 1st so i am seriously too busy to check this sight daily or fish like i would like to.... sorry....soon i'll have things sorted out again and more time to fish...
the water levels are so low things at the islands are seriously messed up...i have seen so many perch and bass and crappie...fish i did not see until the end of may last year...water is so much warmer...

Nice stuff again!
What type of baits were you trying? Sometimes if they spit it out too fast, a little scent will help hold the fish a little longer. Although I don't think there's ever been a "bowfin scent".

What lures did you have or not have to show to MNR that you weren't targetting out of season fish?

By the way,,, great ugly looking fish.

Who is your new co-star? WHere is David?

david kearney is writing exams
new co-star was fishing out at the islands with his buddy
he comes into my burrito restaurant...i felt obliged to show him around.
lures...do not bring big spoons or #5 mepps or rapala husky jerks or j13's
no typical pike lures or your gonna look suspicous casting those....
i found any plastic or rubber worm without scent was not tasty to bowfin
gulp alive baits or trigger worms were apetizing...one bowfin stripped the worm from a jig and left with it hanging out his mouth...staring me down all the way....
i have tried different jig heads and sizes and the bowfins bend the crap out of the hooks....
rubber grubs, worms etc.black and white colours work...pink,orange,yellow,green,red,brown,grey do not work..so far as i have tested
you need a net...if they get their tail on the rocks or shore they flip off your hook....
you need pliers to get a well set lure from them...sometimes they will not give up the bait...
they bite...or they lock their jaws.....
they are so hard to hold on to...slippery and slimey
they have bacteria in their mouths that you do not want in your hand through a bite
good luck

my new girlfriend..love at first sight...yes she left me and i think it was cause i was holding on to her too tight

Hey Mike I am here, I just finished my exams, I have handed all in and am done for abit anyways, so back to some fishing.

Tangledline, those are some kickass bowfins, and what a carp buddy caught. Nice...I cant wait to get out there and get some fishing done...I know you have a busy week, but I may head out once or twice this week, we will see how it goes. I should have some time to come back and post some more stuff, but for how long who knows, I may go back to more schooling.

again nice fishes.
later baters.

Awesome bowfins, dang man you got your stuff down lmao. The only fishermen i ever see at the islands during May is the Bass poachers, they usually give their rods to their kids and instruct them to snag the fish. Dumbasses don't realize that we now have things called cellphones. He He i love T.I.P.S, too bad they never come or do anything about it -_-"
