Well, I've been fishing for a while, and though I am still learning I feel like I have gone from looking like a fool whipping lures in puddles and getting skunked to finding new spots and almost every time I go now I always catch a fish! I was reflecting the other day and decide the that the five most important virtues a beginner fisherman/women must have to succeed are:

1) Open Minded - Be willing to take advice from anyone! From a 99 year old men or a 2 year old girl, if they are catching fish listen to them. Chances are there is some truth to what they are saying.

2) Patience - If at first you do not succeed continue, do not leave a new spot until you have fished every lure in your tackle box in various speeds and directions! If you see a fish in the pond keep returning until you catch em!

3) Practically - YOU DO NOT NEED A 15 DOLLAR LURE TO CATCH FISH! I find myself laughing at people throwing 15 dollar senkos, plugs and frogs and getting skunked while I am fishing with a 3 buck package of 15 senkos and catching fish left, right and centre! Once you find what works stick to it. Throw bait towards structure! Fish love structure! You might catch a fish in open water, but fish tend to congregate to structure.

4) Do the leg work! Take the time to explore, find the hidden spot. Nothing is more rewarding then heading to a special spot after a hard day and being all alone, nobody in sight or earshot! (Hard to do if your a urban angler, but still possible)

5) Read, Watch and Listen! Gather tons of information, search youtube for videos full of tips and info. Go to your local tackle shop and listen to what they have to say! Subscribe to fishing magazines, read articles, follow blogs.

Hope this helps!

Matt

Fishing structure is also a great tip. I fished a new spot today, after much legwork, with a lot of structure, and was rewarded with fish  I also slipped on a big rock, and fell into some deep water between the rocks, slicing my right leg open in several spots, narrowly averting submerging my blackberry and car keys. Later today, while wading with my blackberry in my pocket, leaky waders let in enough water to cause serious damage to my phone  I also managed to cut my right leg, again, at another spot.

Tip #6: Fish with caution

Amen, brother, amen... sticks to those building blocks and yer in for the ride of your life!

I would also add:

NEVER FORGET to HAVE FUN!

Somedays the bite is off.

Somedays the Knowledge learned is more important later than in the moment

Somedays you will meet some new Friends

Somedays the fishing is Magic

Somedays you never know ....

Either way, EVERY DAY of FISHING is worth a million dollars.
* So I figure I'm a BILLIONAIRE!

Yeah--but you don't have to scuba dive to investigate structure

Surely this is not an example of your "guiding" expertise....

I could use that tip. Two weeks ago the exact same things happened to me. The scratches and cuts are healing but not the pain of my dead iPhone, with everything i had on it.

we were talking about the phrase in your signature the other night while fishing........keep fishing hard and it starts coming together.

Hahaha I didn't even get to investigate during my plunge. Come to think of it, snorkeling wouldn't be a bad thing to offer during summer guiding at all. Would be a great way to see fish in their natural environment ;)

Did you try vacuuming your Iphone? Look it up on youtube, might be worth a shot.

My scratches look pretty gruesome today, as do my white blood stained shorts.

We all have a little Bill Dance in us from time to time.
