So you're out at night, you manage to get one and under the pale moon light, you think to yourself, she's a beauty!

That is until you see the face up close in some light, and a smile that reveals anything but beauty.

Nice walleye Salmo, it's still a beautiful fish unless your a minnow then the smile turns to a jaws episode. tardun tardun... :)

I prefer to eat my roaches...has a more long lasting effect. Lol just kidding I dont actually do that but I do know a guy that does!

FishingNoob may be a youngin'.

Getin is correct, no fight at all with these guys. This one, however, made a huge leap out of the water, and sang " 'scuse me, while I kiss the sky!"

Great pics!!!! Walleye close up look really cool.

Anyone saying walleye have no fight has never caught big walleye, IMHO.

Big walleye (ie 28" +) roll, run, jump etc. They will test any anglers ability to keep the hook in, trust that.

and yes, I've caught plenty of 10lb + walleye, not just talkin smack, lol

Truth be told, I have caught 1 10lb+ giant in my life, out of a river.

My first thought was that I had definitely hooked a beaver. I freaked out a little bit and I was even a little scared. After horsing it around a little bit (the pool was at least 10 feet deep), I saw the head and eyes and realized, holy crap, it's a walleye! It fought, but nothing compared to a steelhead or salmon. I landed it on 10lb mono not long after, and as I was beaching it, it flopped and snapped the leader. I grabbed it, but it was too big and flopped back in the river. At that point I went to go grab my net from my car, because even though I technically landed it, it sucked not being able to take a pic so I wanted to be able to net my next one.

When I returned, I saw my mepps and thought, at least I can recover my spinner. Lo and behold, the mepps was still attached to the leader, and actually hanging out of the fishes mouth! The thing was so giant, I didn't even realize this at first, it just looked like underwater structure (this was at night). I attempted to scoop it up with my net, but it had already rested enough and took off - I don't think it was going to fit very easily into that net anyhow.

I have also heard that walleye can fight harder out of different lakes. I've caught small walleye out of pike waters, and I thought it was a pike until I got a real close look after landing it. But the rivers I fish, compared to the bass and pike, I can usually tell I have a walleye on the line because they tend to feel lifeless.

lol Salmo, you have quite a few questionable fishing tales...

Name one?

All of the regulars at that spot have also caught giant walleye there. Two of them were there that night. It was September. That's trophy time.

There are actually shots of the MNR stocking big walleye posted along that river...add that to the fact that hardly anyone knows that they are in that watershed, and few ever fish it at night, and you have a recipe for catching trophy walleye.

Average sized walleye out of there mid summer:

Here's the small one I caught. I was catching pike around 20 inches that evening, and thought it was another pike. So this one was scrappy.

The babies are in there too..

nonono I believe you caught the fish, you just always seem to have wild experiences once the fish are caught.

lol, salmotrutta, that had to be heart wrenching

I've caught walleye all my life, and yes, the small ones can be dull and lifeless, unless your fishing ultralites, then there fun as hell.

Big ones fight and fight hard, and I've endured numerous times. I've even watched the most seasoned pros fumble around like rookies hooking big walleye (pros in other species).

One thing to remember though, is alot of times big walleye come as incidental catches, and if your flippin bass in heavy cover with a 7ft rod and 30lb braid, well yeah, no poop a walleye has no fight when you super exaggerated the hook set then reel in at 400 miles per hour, lol.

This also applies to steelhead etc, but the opposite. Many feel they are the best fighting fish (which really is no stretch) but.... Look at the gear being used. Even a 10lb steelie feels like nothing on the rod I mentioned above. That being said, most steelhead anglers are actually using gear that makes it fun to catch these fish, when in all reality, thats what makes fishing fun

Got this one last summer up at Sturgeon with 6 LBS and Ultra Light.

Ran Loopy around weeds, came to dead halt .. then gave some shakes and into the boat.

Fished the whole day with that set up.

About the only thing that would have cause a "problem" would have been a muskie (Big One).

My friend caught this "little Tiger Muskie" and he was using light as well (White Mr. Twister)

- He sure seemed happy with action & catch! ... for the size (Surprise)

To each their own, but I still personally dont understand the whole 50 Lbs+ braid set up.

Not for me.

Looks like youve got a good spot there salmo the variance in size shows good reproduction...ya know when pickies fight real hard? ......Winter. Heading back out sat in hopes to expand on my new lake, gonna try some trolling yo zuri deep runners on casting gear over20 fow maybe drift some crawler harnesses if theres enough wind. This is turning into a decent thread with good pics
