With the weird winter and hardly any ice formation... is there going to be an ice-out pike season like last year?

Was at Frenchmen's yesterday and there was a thin layer of ice. Fished around that but not a single bite. Too early?

Going to post report soon.

I would have thought the ice out season would begin as the ice fishing season ends and the ice pulls away from shore.

Im not from the GTA, but if areas in the GTA are ice free there may not be the great Pike ice-out bite that there usually is. This is all assumption based but I would think the ice out bite occurs because the ice pulls away and the sun finally penetrates through causing baitfish to hold close to shore making for great pike fishing. Again that is a purely assumption based theory that I just came up with now.

Anybody know if this is/is not the case?

I guess it could also be good fishing in the shallows because of the warmer temps

The sun will still warm up the shallow water first attracting baitfish. The guys in the Hamilton, Niagara region are enjoying the results of this right now. You are bang on MichaelA. :)

I think I really need to start fishing during the winter months. I've got all the cold weather gear from doing snow removal, I just need to get out there and fish. But I never have any luck at the peirs/river mouths by my place, and noooo snoww means no money for gas to go anywhere. I hate mother nature!!!!! lol.
