Now that the long winter seems to finally be over- interested in getting out for early spring lake/speckled trout. Have seen lots of references to going after "ice out" lakers- but honestly don't know much about timing, tactics etc. Example: Is there a best time to head out- length of time since the ice was gone, water temp etc? Trolling (and lure) advice? Can one cast from shore and get them? All advice/tips/articles welcome! Thanks!

I believe that you can catch them shallow after ice out throwing spoons, or spinners, or minnow type baits.

as soon as you can get out on the water get out, right know I would be hitting creek and river inlets since the lakers will be following Smelt small suckers to there spawning areas. Throw Smelt like crankbaits (live target has a nice one) shad cranks would work too.

Brook trout wise: not too sure, I know all kinds of minnows spawn soon (dace and mud minnows for sure) find the minnow spawning area for the larger brook trout, small minnow baits and inline spinners tiped with worm or flys

smaller creek trout, same as summer I guess
