Hey everybody brand new here, I have a quick question which is can I use an Alabama rig on my current fishing set up? My set up is a Abu Garcia vendetta 6'6 medium heavy rod with a Abu Garcia orra spinning reel using 10 pound flurocarbon line. Hopefully I can use them because they seem to be the buzz right now. Hope to hear back from some of you, Thank you.

Few weeks ago I tested an alabama rig on a spinning reel for a few casts while vertical jigging for walleye. I gave it a couple of casts and then put it away as this was just a test because I had never used one before and wondered the same as you. Would it work on a spinning set up? It can work but it feels really akward and quickly becomes too heavy depending on what you put on it. I think 10lb line might be too light for casting that much weight with any force. I had 4 quarter ounce jigs with 4 fin-s minnows on it. The rod was the canadian tire bob izumi shimano rod. 7foot medium heavy, reel was abu 502alb line was 20lb powerpro with 12lb p-line flourocarbon as a leader. I have since purchased some 1/8once jigs with 3/0 hooks. Light jig with big hook, kind of hard to find. I'll be using it with a baitcaster instead. I would defintily recomend not going too heavy with the jig heads or even no jigs at all. You could use offset worm hooks to reduce weight.

Thank you for the helpful information. It is greatly appreciated.

You won't have any success with 10lb fluoro and that rig. Not heavy enough. Depending on the weight of your Alabama rig I would strongly recommend using straight braid. I am going to try my rig out this weekend and I will probably put it on a rod with 50 or 65lb PowerPro. Also depends on the size of your baits and the weight of your jigs. I will be using Mega Swammers and they will add lots of weight. As for jigheads, will depend on depth fishing. There is always a possiblity that when using that setup, you may catch more then one bass at a time.

Make sure your bail does not close when casting with a spinning rod or you will see your expensive rig fly right off and sink to the bottom.

So are these rigs for bottom fishing? Would they be good for river mouths with large boulders or would I just be constantly snagging my rigs?

Found this article online, it looks like if you want to you can make this rig weight the same as a larger spinner bait? Couldnt you get away without the weights on each bait and just have the central weight?

From the information I have gathered on the internet you use this rig in open water either trolling or casting off a boat. I don't know their running depth though, probably deep because of the weight. Yes I believe you could get away without weighted jig heads and just use regular hooks to take off some of the weight.
