Did some night fishing in the gorge. The shore was littered with a massive Alewife die-off. Alewife and blueback littered all over. Many had died within the the last few hours. I poked a few with a stick and some of them still twitched. Most of the floaters were not picked apart by scavengers yet. More continued to wash up as I fished. I must have arrived just as the kool-aid was being served.

Oh boy, all those fish must be fed pretty darn well at this point. Thats a pretty cool event, wishin' I was there to harvest all those dead fish.

Lol, wait, am I missing something? I thought I read people wanted to harvest dieing herring!!??

Fortunately I was not up to my ankles so I was able to gingerly step around the scattered fish.

I did some googling and it had been mentioned on a couple websites that for one, the alewife and blueback were introduced to the great lakes via the Welland Canal. Second, being indigenous to the breakwaters of the St. Lawrence, apparently they are not suited for 100% fresh water and die-off in large numbers with the slightest shock.

I have witnessed nature first hand, but not like this... this... was just crazy!

That would be crazy if the fish where up to your ankles, imagine the fun a cat would have there! I've never witnessed something like that.
