Hey Rusty. At that time of year the Specks should be close to shore and or shallow up there in the lakes. I find you can't go wrong with a small spinner/worm combo. Lucky Strike makes those small ones that you attach your own hook to, they are cheap and allow you to cast into anything and if you lose one or two you are only out a few cents. Silver or gold, one blade or 2 doesn't seem to matter much. In rivers I just stand in the middle, let out my line and more my rod back and forth which covers all the water and the current will give you the spin needed. An assortment of small spoons and rapalas wouldn't hurt either.
Have you guys decided on a route you are taking yet? I can recommend a very good one with some particularly nice Specks. Just not sure if 5 days is long enough to do it properly. I'll check my notes here and see how long we generally spent on it and send a PM.

Great choice! Right before the black flies come out to play I'm pretty sure there'll be no bugs, but be prepared for them if they are there.

Be prepared for cold nights and chilly mornings also.

As for the fishing, I've only been once durng the apring and it played out exactly how Alfie put it. We caught most of our fish in water no deeper than 12 ft. usually around some sorta of structure. Worms were the ticket, hung under a float. Spinners, little crankbaits, stick baits, jigs all caught fish. The fish started hitting stuff at the surface, run a spinner high up in the column and hold on. You'll have on and off days... switch up the bait constantly. Can't help you with the scientific mumbo jumbo in terms of what turns them on and off, just keep plugging away :lol:

I opened up the stomachs of a few fsh we harvested and I found the smaller ones had tiny white water shrimp/fleas? Still squirmin'! The large ones had crayfish skeletons inside their stomachs.

5 days sounds like an epic trip, you wll have a blast. Please take photos and share your adventure

Agreed about the bugs Dozer. Be prepared, I forgot to mention that. April may be a bit early for them, but not always. I remember being up just north of Algonquin with Dad 40 years ago using large amounts of bug spray and wearing those bug nets over our heads :lol: (bug spray not being then what it is now.)
As for your pics, if you keep pic #1 in mind while you are portaging around pic #2 it makes it much easier

Check if Algonquin is a lead free zone... can't remember if it is or it isn't.

I have only fished in the park a couple of times but my family does have a cottage just outside it.

I would just suggest trying to get off the beaten path a bit as you will probably find some better fishing.

Lol. Ya he is, I've known him for years, I actually taught him the trade 17 years ago. As for applying, you would have to wait for a seat to become empty in the truck, which is fairly often
We do get up to Ottawa quite a bit.
