How ya doing? Seeker looking forward to some veteran steelheader's advice. I've recently become obsessed with wading in a cold river, placing my hand on a cold reel and trying to cast this crazy long rod with a reel that spins forever.Sound familiar to anyone? Any suggestions for a cure appreciated. All because my father in law took me to a GB trib and I caught a beauty on a snowy morn last fall. On a spinning rod and flatfish no less, so I thought- I've got to get one of those long rods with the cool fly reel looking thingy. I've done a little fly fishing with a cheap set up but finally got a center pin to try. Humbling to try and cast but man, what a joy to drift with. Can't wait to hook up and experience a dragless fight. And no, I'm not talking about the wife either.

Hey Cold, welcome.

Where abouts are you? Make an offer to meet up with other pinheads and have a great time. You joined at the right time.

Good luck and enjoy the forum.

I just got hooked last year as well . Feels so great to fight on the pin without the drag. Never felt anything like it . I actually started wading in the summer months and then realised the winter brings a whole New world of awesome. And your casting will improve with practice for sure .

assuming you reel in with your left hand--you right index finger is your best friend-use as drag---no more spin--learn to feather it lightly which will come from drifting as you will develop a feel for just how light it needs to be held back to make a difference-----now youtube wallis cast---not many do it as side casting is easier however side casting creates a bit of line twist---wallis is also far more graceful and traditional looking- like the ...fly guys.... kinda graceful

One of the video says, " its like tai chi". Being Asian, I was sure I was going to master this on the first cast. Well I found out real quick that I suck at the wallis cast and I suck at tai chi. It's safe to say that I'm more Canadian-Asian than Asian-Canadian. Welcome to the forum Coldhands, and welcome to the joy and frustration of learning how to become a pinhead :)

Took some kung-fu or gung-fu as it is sometimes called, didn't seem to help me either with that cast, I imagine a little more practice time will help me get further along. I've been letting the current do the work or wading further <_<
