Muskie you're good bud. I understand you. And appreciate all the time everyone put in here. Holy fuck what a nice thread to wake up to at the cottage

you were mentioning jarred eggs. Go to fishheads online site and buy some of his salmon and trout roe it is 10000 percent better then jarred stuff. tie bright and big bags for dirty water and smaller lighter shades for clear water. Pick a couple rivers and learn them first instead of river hoping. first and last light are usually productive. do the leg work don't stick to one spot all day especially if your not hooking up.. watch others, be friendly and ask questions. try to fish 1 or 2 days after a rain fall. buy the book steelhead floatfishing by jim butler, read it twice. once you get your first hen salmon for eggs, prepare them with no cure or just a bit of salt let dry put in air tight bags then freeze, then youll have awesome eggs for a couple years. don't underestimate the power of single beads also deadly, 8mm 10mm in a variety of colours, chartreuse, white, peach and orange being top producers. I also always carry live worms except in winter. lots of pointers but all are important towards success on the river
good luck Darrin

ok, so from reading this, not one person has mentioned your method for adjusting depth, you said you move the shot up and down to adjust depth, thats not going to do much, the only effective way to adjust depth is to move your float up and down. by adjusting shot alone, you;re only changing the way your leader swings through the pool, you still have the same amount of line below your float. keep your shots simple, no need to get into shot pattern a, b, or c.

always present your bait first! essentially, you need to hold the float back a bit to allow the bait to be presented first.

also, look for active fish. fish that are actively moving around in a pool are more likely to strike than the ones with their tails up. everyone suffers from the skunk at some point. but by looking for active fish, you can increase your odds.

I should mention i move my float and loaded up shots underneath it up with it. I'm ordering some fishheads roe as soon as i get home. I love OFF!

I see some mention of roe bags and keeping hens.IMO, especially for a beginner, I would not bother killing a trout for its eggs and then messing around with them. If you need roe, buy it from fishheads . I personnally have never caught a trout on a roe bag, all of my confidence is now in artificials, beads, flies, jigs, etc. Even in dirty water.

if fish artificials a lot aswell but there are times when roe is the best choice. I buy roe from fishheads but once every 2 seasons I take a skiened salmon for eggs and give the fish to a friend, its well within the regulations. hes trying to catch a trout and good roe does the trick nicely

under normal conditions a dime sized bag is about right but will tie up to loonie sized for extream conditions. usually 4 to 5 salmon eggs make a nice bag, off colour 6 to 8 eggs, chocolate milk dirty up to 15 eggs. rainbow eggs are much smaller but stick to the same sized bags.

You don't need to kill a trout for her eggs. If she is ready , you just need to run your hand up and down he belly and those eggs will start flowing out. If not , revive her and let her go,

I love the brown trout roe but for Bow or Chinook I prefer to cure my own recipe. That aside I've caught more on artificial worms and flies but some days roe just out produces hands down.

You guarantee than 90? :p
Im no mathematician but I went from a handful of of fish before I bought that book to a dozen or so the following year, it wont catch the fish for you but I can ho estly say out of all the money spent in the pursuit of steel this was by far the best purchase. For $30 you could learn no less that what a guide may charge hundreds for

dave, OFF have steelheading meetups once in a while. specially cleaning up tribs. for that little effort helping cleaning up, you can learn a lot from the guys here that go.

it usually happens in the fall time after the salmon slaughter. its pointless to do a clean up before that. we've found lawn chairs, shark line and hooks, spears...you name it
