I was just wondering if any one here is a member and what do you think of the organization. Also what are the benefits of being a member and what chapter are you with.

cheers

Hey Bow_Man,

I'm a member, although only for about the last 4 months or so. The organization, to me, seems great. I think conservation, speaking in a more inclusive way than just talking about fish, is still not discussed enough, and I'm more than willing to support organizations like these that help spread awareness, and take on projects to help conserve our resources. I'm a member of the Greg Clark chapter.

In terms of membership benefits, it depends on what you're looking for. I believe a magazine subscription was included with my fees, but you also get access to certain events, and have the ability to volunteer for TU (although I think anyone can do this, and not just TU members).

I'm also a member of, and donate to the Wild Steelhead Coalition. Feel free to check that one out as well :)

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Cody

Thanks Cody, I have been looking at the Niagara chapter ( close to home ), Sounds like it is a good organization. Looks like they might get my money.

I dont think TUC is very fond of our beloved steelhead

Part of their mandate is to protect native species which can sometimes mean not helping the steelhead. For example their influence on the Credit. But for the most part the work they do revitalizing streams is very important.

We are partnering with TUC this year. Middle grand chapter. Think its the newest chapter for TUC. Yeah it sucks they don't focus on steel but most of the tribs they work on get runs of steel. So it helps the native and migratory fish.

I have heard some not so great things about TUC, as well as CRAA, ie: tree planting/stream restoration funding doesn't add up. personally i'd be looking at the hatchery on the rouge and duffins

Thanks for the feedback FF.

I dont know about the cash thing. But i know craa planted tons. I did a.couple days planting in the.spring and there were thousands of them in the truck. Even touring around this fall i saw lots of new ones around.

I'm a member of the Durham East chapter, it really depends on where you join although all looked after by national every branch does things their own way. I wouldn't say that TU is against steelhead, but we do focus our energy towards protecting natives, if that means devoting less resources to the steelhead then that's the way it's going to be.

Reviving an old thread, but wanna know your guys' thoughts on OFAH. I was thinking about going tree planting for them.

I don't think you can go wrong with any organization that helps the river. Some may be pro steelhead, some are pro browns, some are pro brook trout and some don't care they just want clean water and a healthy ecosystem. Go with an organization that fits your best interest and join and have fun. it's a great way to meet new anglers that share your passion and to help your favorite rivers, TU has different chapters that may have a different objective and you should contact the closest chapter and ask them directly about their views and projects..

if you like being pestered about selling raffle tickets, go for it. the liability insurance is nice though for getting into some private properties to access prime fishing spots. just talk to the land owner first, ask for permission, show them the card and explain the liability insurance to them, and they will probably give you permission

What type of coverage is offered? Coverage for yourself if you are injured on their land, meaning they're not liable for your injuries, or what? The insurance has been the standout feature when I've thought of joining as well.

think its like 2 million bucks liability insurance, basically, personal insurance, so the land owner has someone they can sue if something were to happen, say you were snowmobiling, hunting, or atving, or whatever, and you damaged heir property, they have a way to recover the damages and its not going to be out of pocket for them
