Yes, I have used them extensively for at least 20 years, they are an excellent reel with an incredibly smooth drag system. Be advised that they do not have instant anti reverse. Your bail will roll back a bit before stopping. The only time I find this a trifle annoying is when I am fishing with crankbaits and twitching the rod constantly. Otherwise I find it a non issue for jigging trolling and live bait fishing. I have used em quite a bit for cranks though too, so it's not like it won't work. Probably one of the best reels for $100, even though they've been around forever! Edit to add, I see your username is Bowman, presumably a steelheader. The ss1300 was for years the reel of choice next to cardinals for steelheaders, based on the smoothness of the drag. You will see many of them on the streams and rivers today during the pier season, and at river mouths!

i tried one from a friend. solid reel. the drag makes a twangy sound when you get something hooked. at first i thought there something wrong. but it's smooth other than the sound. just didn't bother getting one as i've had spinning reels that are just as good but not as expensive.

No its Bow Man because i bow hunt. :)

Alot of reel that dont have an instant anti reverse usualy reverse back to a trigger to flip the bail. If not then I wouldn't get one because thats just plain annoying and there are plenty of quality reels with instant anti reverse for cheaper. I also wouldnt go to bass pro..tho the 49 reviews of the reel on the site may be helpful seems to get alot of 5 stars..

One of the best reels ever produced ! I own 3 of them and never feel disadvantaged when I fish them. I do own other reels with the instant anti-reverse feature as well.

I have 1. It's pretty good but I find that the bail doesn't flip over when the spool is at the max height(top dead center, you might say). I made a query about this being a defect or characteristic of the reel but did not get a definite answer.
