Hi everyone,

After a 20 year hiatus from fishing I've recently gotten back into it and am amazed by how much things have changed. After a weekend of shore fishing with the kids I noticed a lot of folks using these huge (9ft plus) rods and was looking for feedback on this. Does it make a significant difference and if so any suggestions for a good rod/reel combo that is affordable (say under $150)? Also - any suggestions on good line would be great too.

Really appreciate any feedback and have to say that I am so excited to be getting back into the sport and am thrilled that my kids have really taken to it as well

Happy Fishing all

if you are going to the states anytime soon i suggest you hit up dicks they have a 5$ field and stream inferno if you spend 40$ on a reel which is awesome me and my dad brought 2 each. As for rod length the longer rods help in further casting also for finesse fishing in streams. My go to rod length is 7-8 feet because they can easily be fit into the car and its pretty manageable especially since your re-starting maybe to get a feel of the new rods. As for models, i would suggest you go instore and see what works for you in your budget make sure it feels right weight is right and you like how it looks in person, think of it like buying shoes different syles for different things also different feels to them and your best off getting one if you can see one in stores

Good luck Kinger and tight lines, let me know how it goes, CT

Depends on what you want to fish. Bass, pike, carp, walleye - 6' - 8' rods. Salmon/steelhead 9' - 15ft. With your budget. you can get a better setup. In my opinion combos are being put together for the reason either one item or both items are not selling well.

A 7 ft, 2 piece, medium action, is where it's at for all around fishing. Shimano, fenwick, uglystick, diawa, and abu garcia all make good rods.

my generic rod right now is a shimano convergence 7ft mh fast with a okhuma cs25 reel with 30lb braid, ive caught fish from gobi's to salmon to red drum in the atlantic with it

sounds like a very versatile combo, do you usually use a leader with the braid or do you go with braid right to the hook/lure?
buck when i fish picky buggers like trout i use a 4lb leader otherwise i use braid straight to my hooks, and if i go to saltwater i sometimes use a steel leader. Its an amazing combo i also love my field and stream baitcaster rod with my bass pro shops pro reel with 60lb line for muskie and pike and sometimes salmon, my only problem with that is the casting distance

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. As luck would have it I am actually going to the states next weekend so I will be checking out Dick's sporting goods and seeing what's available down there as well. I'll let you all know how it works out and if they had any good sales.

Does anyone else have the same problem that when you go into a sporting good store you find that several hours go by really quickly and the wallet/credit card takes a good beating? :)

Cheers

ya I've never been able to cast very far with a baitcaster either plus you've got some pretty heavy line on it
ya it helps when im pike fishing or using gigantic lures. my baitcaster helps alot in accuracy if you overshoot in the stream or creek and have to stop it altough i do get odd looks from the guys with center pins but oh well
