For the last 10 years I have been going to the north part of simcoe looking for smelts close to casino rama. Been skunked every year, thinking I went too late or too early and give up going after 3 or 4 tries. I want to go to the Sutton area this year and woundering if they are running yet? I am not asking for spots like some people may think cause I am new. Just wanna know when is the best time to go and get these guys since they caused me headache for the last 10 years.

can't really help you there cause i don't go netting for smelt myself, but geez..... 10 years of getting skunked and you're still at it. i commend that!!

You should be able to get them from mid to late April after we've had a nice warm rain.

I'm not 100% sure about Sutton but I know Pefferlaw and Virginia Beach are fairly shallow so you might have more success hitting some of the beaches or marinas towards Willow Beach or Jackson's Point.

there have been reports of smelt being caught on lake erie on the east side of point pelee. not as plentiful as years past but maybe in a few days things will pick up. also further east towards port alma and erieu. i now that its not the area mentioned in the post, but there are some smelt to be had in this area. commercial fisherman doing real well around port dover and port stanley way out and deep.

Thanks guys, I am making plans on trout fishing saturday and maybe that night try for smelts too since we are having all these rain.
I'll go and try out Pefferlaw this time. Thanks Dirk.
