Friday night, October 3 I went to Ashbridge's Bay to try my luck for some salmon action. Thanks frozenfire – your report from Ashbridge's Bay prompted me to check it out; also thanks MikeyMikey for providing link and map of the place (this was much benefitial)
Last year I visited Port Credit several times but never had any luck and never managed to land any fish, to my great disappointment . I find fishing from rock at Port Credit can be quite challenging, so I was pleasantly surprised – this is not case at all at Ashbridge's.
Anyways, I arrived around 11 PM, and at first I was just observing and checking the place. There were 3 people fishing, I talked briefly with two of them and they said that they did not have luck yet.
I realize I am not well equipped for this type of fishing at all. I brought 2 of my rods, neither one is really good for this. One was my Zebco Pro Stuff 6’6†rod , I had Spiderline Fusion , 30 lb test , 0.22 mm . The other rod, is waaaay toooo heavy (I new that) 9’ long with Robinson Pro Carp 0.405 15,25 kg test , line.
I brought just two lures:
1. Little Cleo glow in the dark ¾ Oz
2. Moonshine Super Glow
Started casting with smaller rod and using little Cleo. I guess I was caught by surprise, as just after about 5 minutes I caught on something, did not know what it was but by line peeling away I was pretty sure it must be salmon. Like I said, this got me by surprise; I did not have my net ready. So after several minutes of fighting I finally got fish closer to the boardwalk, so now I had to fiddle in the dark to prepare my net with one hand and to hold the rod and fish with other hand. Soon I realized it is not going to be that easy to take this fish out. This is where my experience, i.e. lack of it, showed. As I was trying to put fish in the net, I guess I made clumsy move and somehow I managed to unhooked the fish with my net. Oh, nooooo 8)
Well, here it the picture of the one that got away:
Encouraged with this, started casting vigorously , and again, perhaps 15 minutes later, I hooked on another one. Immediately after hooking the fish, line stated “peeling off†line car on race track. I was seriously concerned that I will not have enough line. So fish was racing away and then all of sudden, nothing, no pressure and no tension on the line and rod. Oh, no, is it possible I lost another one, But then , I remember reading in one of reports by MickeMickey, that fish would start swimming toward you, so I started reeling in very fast, and yes, that was exactly the case – fish was not lost. But this one was much larger, much stronger then the first one. Gave me a great fight, with lost of jumps and runs forth and back. O.K., so now fish was tired and I pulled it closed finally But what to do now, I already lost one trying to put it in the net, and this one was bigger and stronger. Well, I had luck, one of the fisherman asked if I needed a help, and I certainly did need it. At first, he was trying to catch fish in the net, but could not manage to do it. Then it was my turn to try. Man o man, it was not easy, now I realize my net was just bit small for this huge fish and it was quite difficult to do it. I have now idea how would I mange if I did not have a help. Eventually I succeeded it and here is the result – my first salmon hooked using artificial lure (and landed) : Yeah!!!
and
I wanted top release this fish, but the guy who was helping me wanted it and I gave it to him.
My goal was already achieved and I had no “pressure†for the rest of the night. About 30 – 40 minutes later I hooked on another salmon, but it happened to me the same thing that happened to frozenfire, i.e. my swivel gave up on me and I lost me precious Little Cleo as well as the fish
Here – this is what happened:
Now I am looking to get me some more Little Cleo lure, I looked today but they are nowhere to be found.
If anyone know where I can get some, please let me know ( I am interested only in ¾ oz)
