some moron at shanty bay ( this isnt a report its about saftey i dont care about name dropping) has a 12 inch auger and is punching holes and leaving them without marking them. watch out guys i fell in (just one leg) up to my waist TWICE today with absolutely no warning. If you see this guy with this auger tell him what hes doing is dangerous and un needed. those fish are big but not THAT big. be safe out there guys. if you are going out in that area and want a better description of where the holes were let me know. HOpefully these freeze up fast, im just happy it was me falling in up to my leg and not a small child swallowed hole to fall into 100+ fow. this is why i hate lake simcoe, full of ice loogans

I think I've seen those 12 inch holes before. They are pretty big, but lots of fun for watching fish.

bum deal! a soaker for the day on ice sucks large. that is a big hole, no doubt, but nobody marks their holes on simcoe. the trees on shore would be bare. not much you can do but make a snow pile or something. if we get a large snow after march 15 there will holes from huts much larger than 12. watch your step out there.

6 inches is the average size. The guy on shanty bay was probably more happy with a 12 incher! Alright, that's it for today.

That's awful, no regard for other peoples safety. Glad you're ok bud. That's one way to kill someone's fishing mood. I fell on a creek few weeks ago, thigh deep. But that was against nature. Yours was man-made.

if leaving big gaping 1-2 foot holes unmarked on simcoe is protocol, i think im done fishing that loogan magnet of a lake id rather not break a leg or worse go right threw.

Thats brutal man, must have been pretty warm for the holes to stay open and for you to continue fishing after a soaked leg! (or you're just a hero haha). Glad no one was injured.

I'm not 100% sure but I think paintball paint is biodegradable and it couldn't hurt to carry some around and squirt em by your hole before leaving to warn others if you're making craters. You could also just get other biodegradable paint.

exactly you are right with paintball paint. as for the soaked leg, i wasnt leaving with out a fish so i fished through it drying off my boot liners socks and coat in the hut with the heater and when i got my fish i left lol good idea about the paint but people are too stupid and cheap to bother, as leaky waders already said this is nothing new for simcoe and theres always big gapping unmarked holes sometimes covered by snow and slush like the ones i encountered. o well thats enough lake simcoe fishing for me.

haha hut and heater eh...swanky! Making my folding chair look pretty bare bones there red.

If people are leaving their holes open a public area without marking themon that is potentially illegal and they could be held civilly and criminally responsible for people who injure themselves.

I don't want to get in to the law too much as all legal issues are fairly case dependent and somewhat lengthy but just want to warn people that, even if you don't care about injuring others, if you get caught leaving open holes unmarked and unattended you might be in trouble.

ive seen daves ice huts out of VB leaving old dead xmas trees to cover there holes when they moved there huts after a warm spell we had which forced all the huts off the lake. I guess only hut operators are required to do this? leaky is right though the lake surrounded by houses u cant go ripping branches from peoples trees to mark holes lol i like the paint idea though. o well im just not gonna bother with that lake anymore, its treated my nice no skunks in my first 3 times fishing for lakers there but after those soakers and hearing this is normal f*ck that sh*t man, not worth breaking a leg for a fish

No everyone is required to but hut operators are just easier to charge and know they are more likely to face legal action if something happens as a result of their negligence.

I agree with you man if it isn't safe don't bother. To put it in terms everyone here can understand: why risk breaking a leg and not being able to stand up and cast come ice out haha!

Yup but loogans will be loogans...nothing different from leaving coffee cups, lure packages or tangled lines with hooks in them. It's that easy. Some people are just lazy...If you can make it out there to ice fish...how hard can it be to mark the holes? It costs about $6 to get a neon paint...pretty cheap to make the lake safer for everyone.

people can be dumb that's for sure yesterday I dodged a few holes big enough to go right in left by sleeper huts and managed to put my foot down one of our own holes like a fool, Just happy it was while we were packing up.
