i bought a few packs of Gamakatsu baitholding hooks (size 6), without looking at the package (I thought I was grabbing octopus hooks) and I was wondering if they're good for trout/salmon fishing.

They have barbs along the shank and would you use worms with this hook? Do you thread the worm up the shank (since there are two barbs on the shank)? I guess putting roe sacs wouldn't work? Neither would minnows, I guess, since you normally hook their mouth or back.

I use baitholders for worms, I don't see why roe can't go on and minnows I'm not sure about.

I have a question, Do most people use a size 6 hook for steelhead?

My hooks of choice have been Gamakatsu Octopus style. I've always bought size 6, but recently tried the size 8 hooks, for a more subtle approach. I've been hearing that sometimes trout don't even care if they see your hook or not or maybe they can't see it?

I think it's just one of those things where not one particular tactic will work. LIke what Beatles mentioned, it's always about trying a different approach, when everyone else is using the same thing just isn't working.

There's so many variables involved with trout fishing that keeps me interested. Prior to salmon/trout fishing, I was a huge bass fan. No offense, but after trying trout/salmon, I find them too dumb and easy to catch. lol A friend dangled pieces of whole wheat bread on the end of his hook and caught some large mouth. hah

10-12 octopus for me, 6 is way too big
besides baitholder hooks have long shanks which is not necessary

Will have to start checking out other hook companies out. The Gamakatsus are not cheap, averaging at $3.00 per bag for a 10-count.

Years back (late 90's) I bought a decent size bag of Daichi's at Angling Specialties for about 3 to 4 bucks. (definitely way more than 10 hooks as I recall) These hooks didn't come in the Daichi brand packaging, I think they were bought in bulk and repacked by the store, but I could be mistaken. Has anyone been down to Ang Spec recently and bought Daichi's? Wondering if they still sell them like that.

I've bought re-packaged Eagle Claw offset hooks for cheap. I didn't take a look for other re-packaged hooks. This is worth looking into actually, since I do remember the Eagle Claw hooks were friendly to the wallet.

okay , but 4 or 6 is good for salmon right?

no man thats big for salmon to. Just cus they appear as huge fish it dont mean u have to buy the biggest hooks out there to catch them. Even they get spooked just like steelhead i'd say size 10 is perfect for them or at least thats what i use.

Try Raven, I sell them for 10.99 for 100pk
Diiachi's are 20.00 for 100
I use the octopus size 8 or 10 for the salmon and specialist 10 12 14 for steelhead. Work great for me
