Bass Opener 2017

Well the 3rd saturday seems to have snuck up on us this year. What are everyones plans for opener? As per tradition I will be heading out the the St Lawrence to chase monster smallies in gin clear water. Hoping to repeat previous years success, I have broken my PB every year for the last 3 going to this spot.
2014: 7lb 4 ounce
2015: 7lb 8 ounce
2016: 8lb 0 ounce
2017:??

It seems that I always catch bigger smallies while going for trout. I caught a monster one-eyed fish this spring, it was close to my PB and for a small creek it was a giant. I would only give it 4lb or so though, so not a freak but it was a great fight. I wish I took some photos but I don't fk around with taking out of season fish out of the water unless it's needed to release it.

Well, this year was not our year.

Water was extremely high and cold, fish were just shut down. Of the ones we did convert there wasnt a fish over 3lbs, hard to say the reasoning behind the inactivity and sparsity but we both decided that the fish were "just" post spawn and scattered. We did come across a lot of beds but no fish on them, so we headed to our favorite current transition where they normally sit but nothing.

The fish we did catch all came on a tube minus one that was on a drop shot. We fished everything but the only thing we found that had any consistency was fishing that tube jig (1 1/2 ounce), popping it hard off of the bottom and letting it sit there for 10/20/30 seconds, they would all pick it up off bottom.

The only saving grace was a big school of perch we found Saturday night, so hungry they were eating a bare drop shot hook... Must have caught 100 in a little under an hour..


Hope the rest of you got into them, Ill be heading to the cottage for the zone 16 opener this weekend. Hoping to have a little more success
