what do you guys think about using trout beads for resident trout? size? colour? distance to hook? keep in mind they have tiny mouth and we want to keep them alive to get big and survive.

They work well in the spring for big residents ImageUploadedByTapatalk1382133997.544700.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1382133997.544700.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1382134091.695450.jpg
They were both caught on a bead in the headwaters of a big northern trib on opener

this are pretty big trout, i was thinking 6"- 14". @ CT whole reason bead fishing is taboo and technically not really legal in ontario, but that is officers judgement, cause most the time the fish get hooked outside the mouth. If you put the bead too far away from the hook it can get stuck in the gill plate, and i don't have to tell you what happens when a fish's gill gets damaged. imagine an inch gap on a 7 inch trout, the entire gill plate is not even 1 inch. hence i was asking if it is a good idea or even safe for small trout.

Most small trout when they grab the bead the hook never goes in there mouth and when you set the hook it will be in the outside of the mouth ... This was the case on Wednesday when I was getting a bunch of smolts while I was fishing for stealhead

just use a 6mm bead with something like a #12 raven specialist 1/2" from the hook.

even when fishing for big trout now I don't keep the bead any more than 1" from the hook because the shakers can get the bead in the eye if its 2" from the hook. Maybe for residents a good strategy could be to use a really small fly as the hook, I have found that a few small shakers took the hook in the mouth when I was fishing it 2" from the bead. I was almost wondering if the bead worked as an attractor in this case and they thought the hook was a bug, I have a hard time seeing a 10" shaker taking a 10mm bead and a size 6 hook 2" away down the hatchet.

they are going for the bead for sure because if you use a double rig as I do with bead and roe I catch them on both !! All the small fish in the system go on a feeding frenzy when the salmon spawn !!! There is something like a 2% survival rate for returning salmon that's because so many of the eggs and fry are eaten in the rivers

what type of tandem do you run, do you just tie on a bead hook with beads and tie a roe hook to the tag end ?

I'm not questioning if Steel go for beads or not, I've caught most of my fish on beads this year. Just that I have a hard time seeing a 10" trout taking in that huge 10mm bead and ending up with the hook deep in its mouth. Sure its possible but a plain gunmetal hook also looks like a small emerging insect so it got me thinking the other day that the smaller fish that haven't been out in the lake yet and are still used to feeding primarily on insects may be tricked by the hook.

Ok how many smolts have you caught on a roe bag?? I've caught a lot while fishing for stealhead and salmon !! They know what the eggs are so why not a bead that looks life a egg

I have got my share of shakers and smolts on beads but personally I find I get more of them off bags.
