So I have a question for you all, what is the rules/ law on beaver dams? I was in a local creek today and noticed the water seemed low, so we walked further up stream to find that in the last 2 weeks a beaver has damned off the creek. This area is a fish sanctuary with strict rules and regulations for fishing.

I believe the dam will have a huge impact on the area, so my question is: Is it ok to "knock" down sections of the dam to allow the follow of water down stream again? If I contact the MNR would they do anything to rectify this issue?

I have seen a similar scenario in a brookie stream. The water flow would go back to what it should be eventually and the fish find new pools. My feeling would be to leave nature do its thing. Most intervention by human have proven to do more harm than good

I agree. I wouldn't do anything, personally. If something is to be done it's probably best that it gets done by an expert or an official. Contacting the MNR couldn't hurt.

I have contacted T.U.C for the specific area, they are going to go in a trap the beaver and have it re-located, also have the dam removed due to the impact on the creek and the fish sanctuary in that area.
They said it could take some time but would be done A.S.A.P.

I also let a message with the M.N.R, but have not heard back for them

I think if you touch the dam you would be "interfering with wildlife" which is a ticketsble offense

I finally spoke to MNR ( they emailed me back for which is was very glad to hear from them).

The are going to contact the proper authorities for this creek to have the dam removed and trap the beaver to relocate it.

They where very happy to get this info and said the issue will be taken care of in a timely manner. Due to the fact this area is a fish sancutary.

glad to hear it worked out. Definitely the right way to go about it, calling the authorities and asking and not doing it yourself!
