Hi guys,

My name is Jimmy, I'm new to this forum, and fishing in general. From what I've seen so far, this seems like a great place!

I went fishing today at the Toronto Islands, but failed to catch anything. I'm here to ask for some advice on how to improve next time.

The fishing rig I used looked something like this:

basic_bottom_rig2.jpg

Instead of one hook, I used two number 12 bait hooks. On the first hook, I placed a Gulp Trout Nugget, and on the second hook, I placed a homemade dough bait consisting of: peanut butter, flour, and cinnamon. I also added a stick float.

Back in vancouver (where I came from), I used to catch peamouth minnows using this rig. But when I tried it here, I couldn't get a single bite.

Can anyone comment on my current fishing technique, or recommend some adjustments?

Thanks!

Like FrequentFlyer said, the rig is fine.

The water is still warming up at the Islands. I've not seen too many panfish in the shallows yet. There are the odd Largemouth, but numbers are still low (and they are still out of season). There are some pike around but they are unlikely to be tempted by this rig. You may catch a carp, especially with the dough bait...but I would suggest up-sizing the hook to at least a #8.

#12 is fine for panfish. I would suggest using short segments of nighcrawlers...or some Gulp Maggots, Waxies...etc. Something to imitate larvae.

Peamouth...cool little fish. I've yet to catch one...tried a couple of times in the Fraser, but both days the conditions were a bit tough to fish for them.

Thanks for the replies, I will buy some larger hooks at Canadian tire.

By the way, does anyone know if Grenadier pond is a good place to fish at this time? I heard there was a massive fish die-off last year.

Don't fish at Grenadier. Not worth your time.

That pond is almost, or maybe it has already reached, the point of no return. The MNR won't stock it (I asked them), and people still take palm sized panfish from there.

Anywhere along the harbourfront, if you have a net, can yield some nice fish, especially carp and pike. We are having a ton of alewife (baitfish) swarming the harbourfront right now, so predatory fish may not be easy to catch.

Like the others have said, upsize your hook to a #8 or 6. Better for avoiding gut-hooking gut-hooking :)

That's a shame, I hope grenadier pond will recover someday. Did they lift the fishing ban at harborfront though?

that so-called ban only lasted.......what, 3 days? It was the harbourfront center misusing an old regulation. Its been long lifted.

me n Pump Knows both fished at western harbourfront without an issue :)

I also wish Grenadier pond will recover some day. Hopefully someone will secretly restock it lol

I believe the TUFA (Toronto Urban Fishing Ambassadors) got that ban lifted awhile ago.

Just make sure you don't fish on private property.

If you wanna fish harborfront, send me a pm and we can fish together.

When are we fishing again?

i fish this rig alot of times, works exellent! but for the river i usually fish where theres alot of snags i use the 3way swivel rig bounces better off the bottom, but if youre fishing calm water this is the absolute ticket, like most members say, upsize the hook, jam a nightcrwler in there and hold on for dear life! just my 2 cents hope this helps
