Hi All!

So I was up fishing for salmon in one of the east tribs Sunday and Monday. Not much going on there on Sunday there wasn't much biting at the mouth or up the river. But on Monday went down to the mouth of the river and the fish were biting there. While I was sitting there and watching these 2 guys pull in fish after fish I started to look around at what people were using for bait. I was just using a float with a leader and small thing of eggs and a hook. I saw some people using the same thing float with a leader and egg sack, but the guys that were catching a lot of fish were using really big baits. One guy was using what looked like a big sack of eggs or something like that it was bright red and maybe the size of a golf ball, this other guy was using chucks of eggs still attached to the skin or membrane that holds the eggs, looked like it was cured somehow. I was amazed at the size of the chucks of baits these guys were using, so I decided to put 2 little egg sacks on my hook instead of one, and I started to get more hits. Last year I was fishing beside a guy that was using small orange marshmellows that he had scented like garlic and he was catching lots of fish with them, I was amazed as I am pretty new at salmon fishing. So does the size of the bait matter? Smell maybe? colour?

So my question is what does everyone use for bait, and what size do you use?

so far this year i had the most luck with spoons like a blue and white williams i cought 3 salmon with it at the mouth of a gb trib... my friend only uses yarn that you wrap around the hook and he is very succesfull with it, if you use a larger sack of roe i guess you will have more luck since its much more visible and maybe resembles what some freshly laid salmon roe would
look like floating down the river.... if you look on the web for salmon bait you see that people do often use huge blobs of roe now how they attach those to the hook i have no idea

Send people a PM with this kinda question. ALOt of people won't want to post information me included.
I like yourself had questions of those chunks peeople seem to have, Sending a PM or a quick google search will produce alot more answers.

if you are at the mouth the best way to get legitimate hits by far is to cast spoons, at night use glow in the dark spoons. Up river a mustard soaked sponge just might work as well as skien lol.

If you are fishing up river you might as well stick to your small roe bags because you never know what other salmonids might be around.

Orange - before sunrise
yellow - noon
green - before sunset
pink - murky waters
white - bright clear water

Is that the regular mustard or the honey mustard? Maple syrup works, so im thinking im going to try the honey mustard next time. Cheese sponge is best though...really holds the mustard longer.

At the mouth, lures - spoons, J13's, big crankbaits, etc...

In the river - Controversial topic... On one hand, I've heard that single eggs can work and I've also heard that huge chunks of skein work...

My personal favourite is sponge marinated for at least 24 hours in a good pork or steak marinade, then dipped in Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce prior to serving to the salmon. :)

agree with bbq sauce...tried bathing some live worms in them and rainbows and chubs give some non stop action...
