Hello everyone, just joined and wonder how many take your dog or dogs on fishing trips with you?.

Also what are some good dog breeds that work well around/in water and just on the fishining trip in general?

I relize you can bring any dog breed outdoors etc, but what breed works better.

Looking into getting a puppy soon and would love to get a breed that I could bring with me on trips!

From what i heard Blue Heeler is the best. Does not wonder of loves water etc. I prefer Labrador Retriever.

I got a wiemeraner lab mix and she just sits in the boat overseeing the fishing activities. When you land one she comes over, sniffs it and goes back to laying down.

My golden retriever loves coming on outings with me! Remember that different breeds defiantly have different personalities and some would be better than others to take on outdoor adventures, but it ultimately depends on how the dog is trained! Cheers

proper training and socialization is key to having a good breed, all dogs will be good around water, its all in how they are brought up

Not to hijack this thread, but does anyone bring their dog out in a canoe? Mines about 25lbs.

I never tried. Mines about eighty pounds and she takes up a lot of space and doesn't know how to use a paddle. I would think a twenty five pounder would get on nicely in a canoe.

I grew up always having golden retrievers. They're a smart breed and easy to train plus they're great with kids and other dogs. I'm a huge fan of the breed so a little over a year ago my girlfriend and I got Kevin. He's a perfect dog for fishing trips, loves to lay on the casting deck and gets about as excited as I do when I catch a fish!

Here's a picture of him from one of our many outings last summer

the one that stays quiet and doesnt run in the water or chase your fish while your trying to land it is the best ;)

I have a couple times, my dogs about 65lbs, she just has a hard time keeping still as well as getting in and out of the canoe. Also depends on how sturdy the canoe is!

Labs, retrievers, weimaraner, pointers are all great outdoor dogs. Buddy has ridgeback and he jogs outside with it however you'd need a tugboat to lug that beast around  Get the dog used to the outdoors and any breed will work. We have small dogs right now and its a pain - I'm constantly looking around for predators while on the trails up north - damn chickadees can swoop down and make off with my mutts...

I'd have to agree...I have a jack russell as well; decent/quiet in the boat until you catch a fish...
Loves the action and won't tolerate being left out...swam from shore once on a fair-sized lake so he could be in the boat with me...
It's too bad that my best buddy can't be my best fishing buddy
