You guys looked thrilled, except for that second last pic where you look wasted

Welcome to OFF, a bit dfferent from OFN ;)

By the way, hows the fight on those guys, I have yet to catch one

Those are some nice catches. Are they St Lawrence River Sturgeon?
I've never caught one either Dozer, but I have seen them caught on TV and they appear to give a good account of themselves. What say you Mike? You said they were incidental catches, what were you after and what were you using to hook those beauties?

Alfie.

Nice fish, haven't really seen one that up close before, kudos on the careful catch and release too.

I managed to get out in the boat yesterday for some WALLEYE fishing... However they wouldn't bite...for me anyways...

There were 2 other boats in the area that were getting a few fish...but for some reason we kept catching sturgeon... By ACCIDENT...

First one we didn't know what was going on... Then after about 30-40 minute battle with 6lb test fireline and a 6'6" med action spinning rod... We saw the beast coming up from the depths...

We couldn't believe it... There aren't many caught in my area (st.lawrence river)... Even tho there IS A SEASON for them in quebec on the st.lawrence...They aren't targeted...

So we shook it off as a fluke and back to trying to catch some dinner...aka...walleye

10 minutes of jigging and my buddy sets the hook... At first we thought it was a big walleye...but it wasn't long before we realized it happened again... Another sturgeon... Another battle...

After landing that one I said to my buddy... If we get one more of those things we're leaving...

10 minutes later I entered into the most epic battle I've ever had on rod and real... Testing my already tired arm...undersized rod...and 6lb line... With nightfall approaching.... I worked the fish as hard as I could so we could see what we were doing... Soon after I landed a sturgeon that I estimate was over 40lbs...

My biggest fish ever...

After that we left the other "successful" boats to their walleye they were catching and we headed home to have some beers to celibrate...Our walleye skunk...lol

These catches were accidents and were released after a quick pic... I'm not bragging about my catch... I just think its interesting and they are huge fish...Once in a lifetime kinda day...

due to an incident on a different forum

i want to make it crystal clear...

these fish were caught by accident... and in a short time span (2 hours)...we were targeting walleye... we didnt sit on them trying to catch them all day... they were released healthy... and after this experience i have zero plans on returning to that location during cold temps because it is obviously a spawning area for these amazing fish... and i do not support fishing out of season fish... but you cant always control what bites...

 I am so glad you posted that here Mike !!! . Its a bit quieter in here, but it makes up for it in hospitality!!!!!

Upon reading further, I am guessing that there is a season on sturgeon fishing in the St Lawarence. I was unaware that people even kept these beautiful monsters.
An accidental catch with an immediate release after a photo, is totally legal, don't sweat it. I have caught many fish out of season, while targeting another species. Not much you can do. I have found that if you attach a sign to your bait that says "Chrome don't bite." It doesn't keep the Steelies away when they are hungry. All you can do is the right thing..
I had an experience here where I live in Hamilton about 2 years ago. Fishing for whatever in May I hooked and landed a Smallie about 7 lbs, Later I found out 7.12 lbs. As I was trying to let this fish go a CO yelled at me don't do it. He came down and told me that it was the biggest Smallie he had seen caught in the Harbor in his 10 years working the area. After the CO had taken a few scale samples and measurements and weights, this bass was released to go and perform her spawning duties.
Nothing to be ashamed of landing an out of season fish, you have no control. I have landed American Eels in the Credit River, not allowed, at the time but they were landed and released and treated with respect. That was the main thing.

nice sturgeons i also got some jigging walleye before but it was in the ottawa river near pembroke i think it was third week in oct 2006....insane fight harder than any silver brawler i ever hooked. you know they only spawn once every five to seven years?

i did not know that...

ive fished near pembroke on the ottawa...thats where i caught my first sturgeon...

we were fishing around cotnams (?) island area... lots of tiny walleye up there... also caught some channel cats... may 24 weekend...

"incident on another board......................."

Hmmmmmmmmm--don't sweat the small stuff (been there, done that, never got the T-shirt)
