Im finally ready to take the plunge and order some blanks and components to build my first float rod and while im at it to save on shipping im going to order a blank and some components for a spinning rod build. It’s a big step to take so I want to make sure im getting all my information straight before ordering.

1. Float Rod

Blank – Im pretty set on the MHX 13’ 2pc blank in the 4-8lb rod. I had a chance to hold the 14’ 2pc and it wasn’t to whippy or to strong so I think im going to like the 13’. Another option I had considered was a rainshadow blank but it’s a pit pricier and a lot of people seem to have them these days. Im interested in hearing pro’s and con’s about the MHX, so far I’ve only heard good things but that is only from a few people.

Guides – I have the Fuji Alconite on my current Sheffield float rod and I haven’t had any issues with them. The guides are kind of the hardest decision for me to make in this purchase as they range so much in price and I have no idea what to believe when it comes to quality and what is worth spending the extra cash on. Id like to save some money on this build so SIC’s at $150 are probably out of the question but I also don’t want to have cheap guides that im going to regret.

Handle – Im lucky that my buddy Ray has taken up handle turning, I’ve seen some of his first pieces and they look quite nice!

2. Spinning Rod

Blank – I have no idea where to start here. I feel as though I don’t have to spend too much on a spinning blank, maybe $50? Important factors are weight, sensitivity and a fast tip. Im thinking of a medium strength rod in a 2pc 6’6 (that size can fit perfectly in my spare tire compartment) or something longer in a 3 or 4 piece. Unfortunately not many spinning rods are built so there isn’t a lot of information for me to go off of.

Guides – Again I don’t want to get too crazy on the guides. Something that is of decent quality but doesn’t break the bank.

I am likely going to order all of this off of Mudhole.com unless anyone knows of a Canadian distributor for the MHX blanks. Any input is greatly appreciated!

Also does anyone have experience with customs ordering off of Mud Hole? Just curious if I will have to pay duties on all these pieces. If so I may end up just ordering the MHX blank there and try to source everything else locally.

I dont know much about the blanks your talking about however I do a lot of shopping online for fishing gear and jig making supplies.

Chances are youll be receiving the blank from fedex or ups as its a larger package, you wont be able to escape duties, fees, taxes
