bowfin can survive out of the water for short periods as they have adapted their swim bladders to breath air directly to exchange oxygen and co2 but must still have water passed over their gills within a short period to exchange and rid themselves of harmful chemicals...see article....thus for better survival rates its best to get them back in the water asap.

What makes you think everyone knew this?
I think that bowfin are one of the least understood fish we have in our waters.
 
the point was that unless you get them back in the water in reasonable time they will suffer irreperable damage not due to lack of oxygen but because of built up chemicals in their bodies that need to be exchanged through water and their gills 8)
